IPL 2025 Mega Auction: No RTM Card Rule? BCCI Set To Allow 5 Retentions – Reports

IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Although the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) hasn’t revealed its final decision officially about the player retention policy, the latest reports reveal that the Right to Match (RTM) card option will be completely removed. Instead, each franchise will be allowed to retain upto five players for the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2025.

In the previous mega auction in 2022, each team was allowed four retentions, including an overseas and three Indian players. As the cycle of three years is completed, the franchises will be permitted with an overall of five retentions. The rule seems to be interesting since teams will be able to retain their core players and build a strong squad through the mega auction.

Why there is no Right to Match (RTM) Cards for IPL 2025 Mega Auction?

The BCCI is convinced that allowing five retentions per team for the IPL 2025 mega auction helps to enhance the brand value of the rich cash league.

The RTM cards allow the franchise to reacquire the unretained players in their squad for the highest bid received during the auction. This rule was introduced in 2014 and marked its return during the IPL 2018 mega-auction, where the RTM cards were last used by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to retain Dwayne Bravo and Faf du Plessis. Similarly, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) retained Robin Uthappa and Piyush Chawla using the RTM card.

In the IPL 2022 mega auction, two new teams namely Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) emerged. To allow these two new franchises to build a strong squad, BCCI scrapped the RTM card rule.

Once again the BCCI plans for a strategic approach by eliminating the RTM card rule that allows players movement between the teams to make the mega auction much more dynamic and exciting. Also, it makes the franchises reconsider their financial strategy, which could lead to competitive bidding for key players at increased prices or planned investments in rising talents.

IPL Teams Debate over Player Retention Policy

Earlier, on 31st July 2024, all the owners of the ten franchises attended the meeting held by BCCI to discuss various rules such as retentions and impact substitutes. A few franchises expressed their desire to have upto eight retentions while other unsettled teams were satisfied with the rule.

Mainly, the successful and settled franchises such as Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI) preferred more than four retention options. Currently, with the possibility of five retentions, these teams will find some consistency before entering into the next edition of the league.

It is understood that the teams that had a good season in IPL 2024 will find the 5-player retention policy favorable. On the other hand, teams such as Punjab Kings (PBKS), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Delhi Capitals (DC), and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) that had a disappointing campaign in the previous edition would be satisfied with minimal retentions.

Benefits of Five Player Retention Rule in IPL 2025 Mega Auction

By implementing the five-player retention rule, the BCCI ensures that the IPL 2025 mega auction could become much more successful due to these main advantages:

1.No RTM Card: A Cautious Choice

As the RTM cards aren’t allowed, franchises follow a cautious approach before releasing their key players.

2. Main Focus on Indian Players:

Franchises can retain upto three players which highlights the positive aspect of nurturing a local young talent as well as maintaining its core set of players.

3. Uncapped Player Retention:

To maintain continuity, teams can retain two to three uncapped players apart from the main retention list, thereby encouraging the growth of young domestic players and nurturing them to play at the international level.

4. Increased Salary Cap for Financial Flexibility:

It is reported that the salary cap would increase from INR 100 crores to INR 120 crores, which allows the franchises to spend funds on premium quality players with increased financial flexibility and retain their core ones. A transition from the previous cap of four players helps to build a solid squad that can compete against the top-performing teams.

5. A Thrilling Mega Auction:

Offering a larger retention pool allows the franchise to safeguard its core players and release others to bid aggressively for top-performing players. As a result, the mega auction becomes much more dynamic which allows team owners to think out of the box and come up with several unique ideas to attract high-profile cricketers.

Final Thoughts:

Most importantly, it remains to be seen if Chennai Super Kings could make use of the five-player retention rule to retain MS Dhoni and grab the headlines. The former Indian captain has been the heart and soul of the franchise since its inception in 2008 and his legacy and leadership skills will be vital for the team’s strategy in the IPL 2025 season.

Currently, there isn’t any official update about the player retention rule or auction date. But the BCCI might announce the retention rules at the end of this week or ahead of the mega auction which could give a valuable chance to all franchises to prepare with their bidding strategies.
