Australian Star Cricketers Likely to Skip IPL 2027 for Ashes and WTC 2027 Final

Australian star cricketers face a tough decision on whether to sacrifice the IPL 2027 to stay fit for a potential World Test Championship (WTC) final, if they qualify. Also, the Ashes will be played away from home during the June-July window in 2027.

Key players like Travis Head, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Cameron Green are expected to opt out of the IPL 2027 to fulfill their national duties.

For the next year, Australia’s international cricket calendar is busy with 20 tests and 14 white-ball matches.

Meanwhile, Australian men’s team head coach Andrew McDonald clarified that the decision will be taken soon on how many star cricketers from their nation can participate in IPL 2027.

‘Require a Proper Balance’: Andrew McDonald Explains

During the media interaction with Cricinfo, Andrew McDonald spoke about exposing the best Australian players to T20 cricket as well as balancing the commitments:

“Certainly! People will start discussing the IPL from when there is space in the cricket calendar. As I have earlier said, IPL is certainly a part of the management plan, which means a lot for our players.

It becomes important to expose our best cricketers in highly competitive T20 cricket, which has its own performance benefits as well. You should balance the other commitments as well.

I am well aware that people will certainly ask questions if you prefer country vs franchise cricket. Most importantly, this period helps our fast bowlers to reset their body condition. They need everything set to give themselves the best chance across 20 or 21 matches that everyone debates.

Our players will make smart decisions across their journey guided by the medical staff and the coaches. Their main priority should be representing Australia, particularly with the Ashes coming up, ” McDonald said.

WTC 2027 Final: Andrew McDonald Opens up About Tough Decisions

Although Australia hasn’t officially qualified for the WTC 2027 final, they are the favorites to qualify for the championship clash as they currently rank at the top of the points table.

“Yeah! We hope Australia gets into the World Test Championship final and then comes the ODI World Cup 2027. In this period, Australia needs to priortize several important commitments. So, we should make some tough choices.

It’s important to start believing that you can do everything. If you begin with that mindset, you can make choices more confidently and then decide what could be best for you,” the 45-year-old added.

McDonald suggests that IPL should be an option for Australian players rather than a compulsory commitment.

A Similar Situation Aussies Faced in 2023

Before IPL 2023, Australia faced a similar dilemma where they had to priortize the WTC final, where they triumphed over India by 209 runs. In the same year, the ODI World Cup took place in India, and the Aussies claimed their sixth championship title with a 6-wicket win against the hosts in the final.

Key Australian players like Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Travis Head missed that IPL season to regain their form and body fitness in the April-May window. The trio played a pivotal role in Australia’s successful World Cup campaign that India hosted.

Here is what Andrew McDonald had to explain about resting the main players for IPL 2027:

“See! The best way to approach things is to start with the belief you can do it and then make decisions according to that.

If you accept defeat and declare that it doesn’t fit, then nobody can predict how fit Pat Cummins will be to ensure his availability for the fourth test match against New Zealand? Also, we may not know how Mitchell Starc will be after the South Africa series.

It’s important to gain all the necessary information. You should be able to make decisions after every test match. And once again, IPL will be yet another crucial platform to decide after the completion of the India Test series,” the Australian head coach said.

Final Opinion: Why Pat Cummins May Miss Out on IPL 2027?

The Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins may not lead his team in the IPL 2027 to keep himself fit for Australia’s international cricket commitments. The veteran pacer’s past struggles with back spasms, and there could not be a better option than opting for complete rest in the April-May window.

Australia will play the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India, scheduled in January-February next year. This five-match Test series holds great significance for Aussies to strengthen their WTC 2027 final qualification chances.

Also, the one-off pink ball test scheduled from 11th to 15th of March 2027 marks the historic 150th test anniversary between England and Australia. A potential ICC WTC 2027 final scheduled from 09th to 13th June, followed by the five-match test series in the Ashes tour, Australia cannot afford to miss out key players like Cummins.

Most importantly, the ODI World Cup will be staged in South Africa in October-November 2027; the experienced players need to get relieved of their workload rather than dedicating themselves to the IPL.

Considering the psychological load, players like Travis Head can get tired after a gruelling long tour.

Overall, McDonald believes that IPL should be treated as a recreation that can work well alongside international cricket, but if it clashes with the preparation for high-profile tournaments, then players and coaches need to make decisions accordingly.
