Before IPL 2024, Rohit Sharma captained the Mumbai Indians, leading them to win the trophy five times and stand as the strongest defending champions. During IPL 2024, Rohit Sharma was dethroned from the captaincy and had to play the entire season under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy. Now the IPL 2025 auction is nearing, fans and spectators are keen to get a sneak peek at Rohit Sharma’s fortune with Mumbai Indians.
There are many unanswered questions related to whether Rohit Sharma will leave Mumbai Indians or continue to stay with the team that he captained for 5 IPL title wins. IPL 2024 was an unexpected nightmare for team Mumbai Indians as they declared a shocking decision to replace Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya as captain. If there was the worst season in MI’s IPL history, it is the 2024 IPL, remaining at the last spot in the points table.
Aakash Chopra’s view about Rohit Sharma leaving Mumbai Indians
Aakash Chopra, a Cricket Commentator, YouTuber, and former Cricketer, shared his view on Rohit Sharma’s stay with Mumbai Indians.
Here is what Aakash Chopra said:
“Yeah! Now everything is over with Mumbai Indians and, surely, Rohit Sharma will not stay with this team. It is not that the team will not retain him, I strongly feel that Rohit Sharma will himself leave the team.”
Aakash Chopra added, saying Rohit Sharma’s time to move to another franchise.
“Possibly! Currently, I do not hold any details with me, but I strongly feel that Rohit Sharma’s time is up to get released. I feel there could be a strong possibility that Rohit Sharma wouldn’t show up to the auction table because he might go to another franchise during the trade window.”
In the 2011 mega-auction, Rohit Sharma joined the Mumbai Indians & latter period of 2013, he started captaining the team. At that time, Rohit did the unimaginable to push MI to win their maiden IPL title right from his first season.
Further, they went on to win 4 titles in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020 under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. It was a noticeable failure that the owners of Mumbai Indians came up with a big decision to bring Hardik Pandya back to MI. This not only replaced Rohit Sharma but also the success rate they carried.
Suryakumar Yadav will not leave MI: Says Aakash Chopra
Having said about Rohit Sharma that he would surely leave the Mumbai Indians, Aakash Chopra confirms that Suryakumar Yadav will be playing the upcoming season for MI.
“Yes! It is certain that Suryakumar Yadav will be present in the team Mumbai Indians and will play in the next season. Undoubtedly, neither the MI franchise will leave Suryakumar, nor he will leave the franchise.”
Suryakumar Yadav, popularly known as SKY in short form, becomes the successful new T20I Indian captain. Team India won their ICC T20 World Cup 2024, and Rohit Sharma announced his retirement in the T20I format. After this announcement, Suryakumar replaced Rohit, becoming the new Indian captain for T20I format.
BCCI Retention Rules will confirm Rohit’s journey with Mumbai Indians
In just a few weeks, BCCI will announce the retention rules & only after that, the journey of Rohit Sharma with the Mumbai Indians can be said with certainty.
One of the major considerations BCCI would bring in includes — 3 retentions, 2 RTMs, or 3 retentions and 3 RTMs, or the most preferred option, 4 retentions and 2 RTMs.
The 2024 IPL Auction was just a mini-auction, whereas the 2025 IPL is set to host a mega auction. With limited retention options for each team, the remaining players are sent back to the Auction Pool.
It is said that the IPL 2025 Auction date could be somewhere between December 2024 and February 2025, but the exact date is uncertain until the official announcement.
Aakash Chopra predicts before BCCI announcement on IPL Retention Rules
But before the BCCI could announce anything, cricket commentator Aakash Chopra spoke on his YouTube channel. Aakash strongly predicts Rohit Sharma’s journey with Mumbai Indians will no longer see a possibility of continuation.
Also, he added on saying: “Of course! It is a big question whether Rohit Sharma will stay with Mumbai Indians or leave. For my part, I strongly feel that he is not going to stay in MI. Anyone will think that if they are retained, then might remain for more than 3 years. But that is not practically possible, except when it is the legendary cricketer MS Dhoni. The story of Chennai Super Kings and MS Dhoni is different. But when it comes to Mumbai Indians and Rohit Sharma, I feel it is not about the team retaining him. This is because he might leave and move to another franchise very soon, and I am confident about this.”
