With the IPL 2026 season coming to a close, all franchises have begun reflecting on their performances during the tournament. Franchises that underperformed and disappointed everyone would be criticized for their performances.
One such franchise is the Delhi Capitals franchise, which finds itself in a difficult season with heavy defeats against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Chennai Super Kings. The franchise has a slim chance of reaching the playoffs despite their underperforming players hindering their journey towards the playoffs.
The captaincy skills of the DC skipper, Axar Patel, have come under scrutiny for his poor performance in the tournament. In nine innings, he managed to score 100 runs at a strike rate of 112.50. His bowling average is also abysmal, having bowled 36 overs in twelve games and managing only ten wickets at an economy rate of 8.08.
Delhi Capitals Questioned Over Team Selection and Strategy
Choosing to sideline the flashy batsman Abhishek Porel, not playing an all-rounder like Madhav Tiwari regularly, and expecting a young out-of-sync batsman, Sahil Parakh, to replicate the form of the likes of Vaibhav Suryavanshi have not escaped notice.
While Parakh definitely has potential, he still needs a lot of polishing, and the mega auctions are scheduled in 2027, and therefore Axar as a player may still be retained; however, there is no sign of dynamic leadership as yet.
Since there has been a shift of power from GMR to JSW, it can be confidently stated that the future of Axar as a leader is far from certain.
Immediate Captaincy change in DC?
Axar has not been able to show that he is worthy of being the captain of DC and has been depending too much on coaches Hemang Badani and Venugopal Rao to take calls. Further, taking into account the overall situation, his retaining the captaincy next year would be the biggest miracle.
It was further stated that the coaching staff of the team would not be retained on account of the poor showing of DC.
“Given that Axar has completely failed to show his mettle as a leader and has depended mostly on the coaches such as Hemang Badani and Venugopal Rao for taking decisions, it will be miraculous if he retained the captaincy next year. Also, the entire coaching staff is not likely to be retained,” said a source close to IPL affairs.
Skippers of other IPL teams also facing criticism
Apart from Patel, the skippers of the other two IPL teams, Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant, have also attracted criticism because of their failure to perform well this season.
The Lucknow Super Giants have been formally ruled out of playoff contention, while the KKR, who suffered a six-wicket loss to RCB on Wednesday, are still in the running.
Coaching Staff Under Examination.
It has come to light that the Delhi Capitals management plans to fire the entire coaching staff at the end of the season. This extreme step is taken due to mounting dissatisfaction among the franchisees regarding their present situation. The coaching staff that has included individuals who have experience in cricket has faced a lot of criticism over the course of the season.
The Delhi Capitals coaching staff handles matters related to decision-making, coaching of the players, and tactics during the games. It is the responsibility of the coaching staff to turn around the fortunes of the franchise.
Lots of Missed Opportunities in IPL 2026
It appears that competition is what sets apart the IPL, and this is no different for the current season. The eliminations of sides such as the Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants from competing in the playoffs make the competition all the more intense. However, it would seem that missing out on something has become a habit of the Delhi Capitals in this season.
No matter whether it has been the team’s inability to chase a target or the selection of wrong players in the squad, the team has always seemed to underperform at crucial junctures. It has been made even harder by the fact that some of the key players in the squad have had injuries. The decisions of the coaching staff have disappointed the fans with the arrival of the final stages of the season.
Delhi Capitals’ future in IPL – Fallen in the wrong route!
As the Delhi Capitals prepare for the closing phases of the IPL 2026 season, there is no doubt that much attention will be paid to the future prospects of the coaching staff and the team as a whole. Based on the analysis of the facts given, one can conclude that the decision of the management to change the coaching staff might become a key point of transformation for the team trying to win back their past glory.
From the more immediate perspective, nevertheless, much attention will have to be paid to enhancing the performance of the team and ending the remaining games of the season with success. Despite the fact that their chances of making it into the playoffs are rather slim, the players can still prove themselves and leave a good impression for the future.
