Nepal leg-spin bowler Sandeep Lamichhane has shattered a rare record and rewritten history by becoming the fastest to claim 150 ODI wickets. The 25-year-old achieved this milestone in his 73rd ODI match, outbeating Mitchell Starc’s previous record of 77 ODIs.
Sandeep’s 3-fer against Scotland in Kirtipur ranked him at the top of the charts, ahead of legendary bowlers like Rashid Khan, Mohammed Shami, and former Pakistani spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, who also feature in the elite list of bowlers to achieve this remarkable feat.
Let’s take a look at the top five fastest bowlers from different nations who achieved 150 wickets in a few ODI matches of their career, with Lamichhane leading the stats.
1. Sandeep Lamichhane (NEPAL): 73 ODI Matches
Having started his ODI journey against the Netherlands, Sandeep Lamichhane has become one of the core spinners for Nepal.
His record-breaking achievement of 150 ODI wickets in just 73 games on Monday (May 18, 2026) was truly outstanding.
Sandeep achieved this milestone during the ICC World Cup League 2 match against Scotland. His impressive bowling figures of 3/47 in 10 overs played a crucial role in restricting Scotland to a mere total of 194 in 39.1 overs.
Lamichhane dismissed three core Scottish batters, George Munsey (21 runs), Brandon McMullen (73 runs), and Matthew Cross (1 run).
The young spinner’s rise to fame is proof of the growing competitiveness of Associate nations, as world-class talents can emerge highly competitive compared to the traditional powerhouses in cricket.
2. Mitchell Starc (AUSTRALIA): 77 ODI Matches
Australian veteran pacer Mitchell Starc earlier dominated the charts for being the fastest bowler to claim 150 ODI wickets until Sandeep surpassed his record. The 36-year-old achieved this feat in his 77th ODI match during the 2019 World Cup against the West Indies.
Starc’s 5-fer (5/46 in 10 overs) ripped apart the Windies batting line-up in Nottingham. Notably, he dismissed half of the West Indies batting line-up that includes Chris Gayle (21 runs), Jason Holder (51 runs), Andre Russell (15 runs), Carlos Brathwaite (16 runs), and Sheldon Cottrell (1 run).
3. Saqlain Mushtaq (PAKISTAN): 78 ODI Matches
Former Pakistan off-spinner claimed his 150th ODI wickets against India in Dhaka. During the second final of the Silver Jubilee Independence Cup in 1998, Saqlain’s 3/36 in 9.5 overs alongside Mohammad Hussain’s 4/33 in 10 overs restricted their rival’s innings total to 189 in 49.5 overs.
The Pakistani spin bowler dismissed Indian lower-order batters Nayan Mongia (10 runs), Sairaj Bahutule (11 runs), and Debasis Mohanty (4 runs). In other words, Mushtaq was able to achieve this feat by dismissing the tail-enders of the opponent team’s batting unit.
4. Rashid Khan (AFGHANISTAN): 80 ODI Matches
Having debuted in the ODI format more than 10 years ago, Rashid Khan is the only cricketer from Afghanistan to rank in the elite list. Back in 2022, he bagged his 150th ODI wicket against Bangladesh, where his team triumphed by 7 wickets in Chattogram.
The spin bowling all-rounder’s 3/37 in 10 overs restricted Bangladesh to 192 in 46.5 overs. It includes dismissals of the Bangladeshi batters like Mushfiqur Rahim (7 runs), Yasir Ali (1 run), and Taskin Ahmed (0).
By the time Rashid achieved this feat, he had made his debut in the 50-over format for more than six years.
5. Mohammed Shami (INDIA): 80 ODI Matches
Team India’s only speedster to rank in the elite list is none other than Mohammed Shami. The right-arm pacer debuted in the 50-over format under MS Dhoni’s captaincy back in 2013 against Pakistan. Since then, it took nearly 10 years for him to achieve this remarkable feat in his career.
Shami claimed his 150th ODI wicket against England at The Oval in the opening ODI of the 3-match series. The veteran pacer’s 3/31 in 7 overs includes the dismissals of Ben Stokes (0), Jos Buttler (30 runs), and Craig Overton (8 runs) at single-digit scores before these batters could settle at the crease and make a huge impact with the bat.
Jasprit Bumrah’s 6-wicket haul, along with Shami’s supportive 3-fer, played a massive role in wrapping up England’s total to 110 in 25.2 overs.
