
Recently, Jay Shah, the 35-year-old secretary of BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is set to position as the new chairman of ICC (International Cricket Council). According to the reports, the Cricket boards of Australia and England have lent their support already which means that he has a 100% possibility of winning the elections and becoming the new ICC chief.
However, if the report proves to be true, Jay Shah would be the youngest ICC chairman ever and the only 5th Indian to be leading the International Cricket Council.
Greg Barclay will not continue next term as ICC chairman
Upon completing the 2nd term on 30th November 2024, Greg Barclay, the current ICC chairman stepped down from continuing the 3rd term.
In 2020, Greg Barclay was elected as ICC chairman which was his first term, and re-elected for 2nd term in 2022. As per the statement by ICC. However, Greg has decided not to sign up for his 3rd term and that is the reason he is stepping down from his position which is likely to be replaced by Jay Shah.
Undoubtedly, BCCI’s current secretary Jay Shah has become the top contender for the role of new ICC chairman and has yielded support from Australia and England.
The current ICC Chairman Greg Barclay confirmed on 20th August that he is no longer willing to continue his 3rd term which is yet to begin after November 2024. Being a chairman of the International Cricket Council for 2 terms each having 2 years tenure, Greg Barclay could have decided to contest the elections for his 3rd term. But Greg chose to step down after he was informed of Jay Shah’s intention to replace him.

Jay Shah maintains a very good relationship with all the 16 voting members so he would need just a simple majority which is 51% of votes to win the election successfully (Just 9 votes or more).

The Supreme Court approved the BCCI constitution which says that an appointed member can continue in their position up to a maximum of 6 years before reaching the point of 3 years cooling period. Overall, it means that any person can stay in their respective position for a cumulative total of 18 years of which 9 years in state association and 9 years at BCCI.
Jay Shah has just 1 year left before vacating his post as BCCI secretary. And, If he decides to get into the role of ICC chairman, then he will have a chance to continue for 4 more years as the BCCI office bearer.
