The sixth season of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) in 2025 is likely to take place from November 27 to December 23. All 34 matches will be played across three hosting venues in Sri Lanka.
Also, this marks the fourth instance for the Sri Lankan franchise T20 league to be held in the November-December window rather than the most favorable July-August timetable. Notably, the previous two editions (in 2023 and 2024) were held in the July-August window.
But, the sixth team will likely be inaugurated in the forthcoming edition to compete against the regular five teams, namely Jaffna Kings, Colombo Strikers, Kandy Falcons, Galle Marvels, and Dambulla Sixers.
Why LPL 2025 Will Return in November-December Window?
As the T20 World Cup 2026 is set to kickstart in February, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) decided to prefer the November-December slot as it would suit their requirements.
Also, the Lanka Premier League director, Samantha Dodanwela, revealed the possibility of the sixth team joining the tournament, as the earlier five editions comprised the routine five participating teams.
Over the past few years, the LPL faced struggles with unstable franchise ownership. As a result, the extended duration allows the SLC to follow a cautious approach towards bringing in new owners.
Here is what Dodanwela had to say about the LPL 2025 November-December window and the possible inclusion of a sixth team:
“Yeah! The main reason for planning to conduct the LPL during this period is to coordinate well with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in February.
Currently, the possibility of introducing a sixth team is being scrutinized. Previously, the Jaffna, which was the longest-standing franchise, joined the second edition as Jaffna Kings. And the SLC terminated the Colombo Strikers franchise multiple times for their failure to adhere to their contractual responsibilities,” Dodanwela explained.
LPL President’s Desire to Prepare More Batting-Friendly Pitches
Furthermore, Dodanwela expressed the SLC’s attempt to prepare more batting-friendly pitches for the LPL 2025, which could enhance the batters’ preparation for the forthcoming T20 World Cup:
“See, we are quite pleased with the cricket pitches during the previous season, especially in Dambulla and Kandy. We enjoyed several high-scoring contests as well as a few players smashing centuries during a particular phase of the tournament. I believe it was only in Colombo where the batting was slightly tough,” the LPL president added.
Dodanwela’s statement makes sense as the pitch condition at R Premadasa Stadium is currently being altered. Also, the national senior men’s team players like Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva voiced their opinion to prepare more batting-friendly tracks.
3 Main Hosting Venues for LPL 2025
It is confirmed that the LPL 2025 will be hosted across these three different venues in Sri Lanka, namely:
- Colombo: Rana Premadasa International Cricket Stadium (RPICS)
- Pallekele: Pallekele International Cricket Stadium
- Dambulla: Dambulla International Cricket Stadium
LPL 2025 Avoids Clash with IPL 2026 Auction
Most importantly, the latest window of LPL 2025 won’t conflict with the player auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. So, it is understood that the broadcasters, as well as the fresh and experienced talents, can coordinate with the schedule more smoothly. This helps to attract a high level of global audiences and makes it easier to look out for new players.
LPL 2025 to Face Competition from Several Franchise T20 Leagues
Even though the LPL 2025 is planned during the November-December slot, but is certain to face high-level competition from other franchise T20 leagues such as:
- SA20 League 2025-26: 26th December 2025 (Friday) to 25th January 2026 (Sunday).
- Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26: 14th December 2025 (Sunday) to 25th January 2026 (Sunday).
- International T20 League (ILT20): 02nd December 2025 (Tuesday) to 04th January 2026 (Sunday).
Also, the IPL franchise owners operate teams in both SA20 and ILT20 as well. So, the overseas players’ commitments remain a big challenge for the LPL franchises.
Moreover, several T20 leagues across the world have rescheduled their fixtures compared to their routine window to avoid clashing with the T20 World Cup 2026.
Overall Opinion
By scheduling the LPL 2025 in November-December, the Sri Lankan cricketers get an opportunity to take part in a highly competitive tournament, which could enhance their preparations before the T20 World Cup.
Even though the pitches might be prepared as batting-friendly, the batters will be under pressure to sharpen their aggressive approach and try to find unique strategies to score runs instantly. This helps them get better in their run-making skills on the subcontinent pitches during the high-profile tournament in 2026.
