The Bangladesh government on Saturday (March 28, 2026) shut down rumors of revoking the suspension on the Indian Premier League (IPL) telecast.
Over the past few days, several reports indicated a drastic shift in stance from the Bangladesh government.
The speculations continued to increase following the comments of Zahir Uddin Swapan. During the recent media interaction. The newly appointed Information and Broadcasting Minister conveyed to Deutsche Welle and other media outlets that the ban on IPL 2026 telecast would be lifted in Bangladesh.
‘Don’t Want to Mix Politics and Sports’: Zahir Uddin
Zahir Uddin’s statement outlined a highly practical approach from the Bangladeshi government to avoid the mix of sports with politics.
“See! No one imposed any restrictions on us to telecast IPL. We don’t want to combine politics and sports. All we should do is view it from a commercial perspective.
If any channels are interested in telecasting IPL, we are ready to positively consider it.
We will not impose restrictions on anyone from telecasting the world’s biggest T20 league. Regardless of Star Sports or other channels telecasting it, we would consider positively rather than forcing anything,” Swapan said.
Massive U-Turn: IPL Telecast Ban to Remain Effective? Zahir Uddin Statement Proven Wrong
Despite Zahir Uddin Swapan’s strongly worded statement, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting dismissed media reports suggesting that the IPL telecast ban still remains effective.
Here is what the statement read:
“No! There is no such official confirmation. The Bangladesh government’s previous stance on IPL telecast suspension remains effective.
The earlier reports claimed that the government lifted the ban on IPL telecast in Bangladesh. Similar reports continue to speculate and have come to our attention.”
A letter has been dispatched to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, officials revealed, and asked for additional guidance.
“Certainly! The opinion from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, further action will be taken by the Information Ministry,” the official statement added.
IPL Broadcast Ban: Aftermath of Mustafizur Rahman’s Release
Mustafizur Rahman was signed by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for INR 9.20 crore during the player auction. Later, the Bangladeshi cricketer was released by his franchise after receiving severe backlash for acquiring a player from a nation where Hindus were brutally tortured.
Following the directives from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the 30-year-old was forbidden from featuring in the Indian T20 franchise league.
Even though the Indian cricket board didn’t provide a proper reason to abruptly end his deal, the timing of his termination coincided with the large protests in India over the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh.
After the exit of Mustafizur, Bangladesh banned the live broadcast of IPL matches across the nation.
IPL 2026 Access Across Satellite and Digital Platforms: Accepted or Rejected?
So far, none of the television channels or digital platforms has acquired the broadcasting rights of IPL 2026 matches in Bangladesh during the ban period.
However, there are possibilities for acquiring network licensing in the middle of the season, and the Bangladeshi government is open to it. If such happens, the satellite networks like T Sports or GTV are likely to secure the rights. Live streaming option is expected via regional digital platforms like Rabbitholebd and Toffee.
Has India-Bangladesh’s Strained Relationship Improved?
Both nations have shown slight positive signs of development, where their leaders have been showing goodwill towards each other. However, the same stance hasn’t been extended to the sporting domain, with IPL broadcast in Bangladesh remaining uncertain.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is well aware of the damage caused by their forfeiture in high-profile tournaments like the T20 World Cup 2026.
It was a golden opportunity for Bangladesh to rectify its mistakes by allowing IPL broadcast in the nation and rebuild the cricketing ties and international relations.
A reversal in the commercial ban could have fetched huge financial success for the broadcasters. To explain in simpler terms, suspending the league telecast not only affects fans’ interest but also negatively impacts the revenue for advertisers within the nation.

Overall Facts: IPL Broadcast Ban to Continue
So far, there has been no official confirmation on the Bangladesh government’s decision to lift the ban on IPL telecast.
The ministry provided a detailed clarification after Zahir Uddin Swapan’s statement, which triggered media reports to claim the open opportunities for IPL telecasting in Bangladesh.
In other words, the ministry’s contrasting statement, repeating the ban, created extra confusion among the public.
At one stage, it seemed that the government’s unique approach cleared the air for broadcasters, as Swapan stated that several media outlets, including Star Sports, were keen to telecast the matches in Bangladesh.
Contrary to the earlier reports, the situation has now shifted as the IPL telecast in Bangladesh, and its future remains uncertain.
According to the sports minister, the final decision about this matter will be taken on March 30 (Monday) when Swapan returns from his foreign trip.
