Ahead of the meeting with BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) on July 31, all ten IPL (Indian Premier League) franchise officials have requested to take strict action against the overseas players. Earlier a majority of foreign cricketers excluded themselves from the tournament at the last minute after being purchased in the auction without any valid reasons.
The main objective of the meeting at the Wankhede Stadium Complex (Mumbai) is to discuss the number of retentions, right-to-match (RTM) options, purse value, future of impact player rule, and player loaning system. Additionally, the lack of commitment shown by foreign cricketers in recent times will be the most important topic of discussion.
Based on the reports provided by Cricbuzz, most of the franchises have raised issues against several foreign cricketers, who have pulled themselves out of the league. Whereas few other teams have requested to ban those players. As a result, the team owners termed it as a “lack of respect and commitment” from those specified overseas players towards the IPL auction system.
Furthermore, the franchises raised issues about the common trend of key overseas cricketers, who are not ready to take part in the mega auction and wait for a mini-auction to earn huge bids.
Players who have pulled themselves out of IPL in the past few years
A few popular names such as Jason Roy (ENGLAND), Wanindu Hasaranga (SRI LANKA), Alex Hales (ENGLAND), Kane Richardson (AUSTRALIA), and other cricketers have opted themselves out from the IPL seasons in the past few years. They have stated the reasons that the franchises were unappealing. In other words, they have withdrawn from the league after receiving a lesser amount.
Few others stated personal reasons or injuries. These sudden departures not only jeopardized the plans of teams but also evoked questions about the trustworthiness of certain overseas players.
Also, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) requested their players for the 4-match T20 international series against Pakistan before this year’s IPL playoffs commenced. The Board stated that the series was a preparatory phase before the T20 World Cup 2024 and emphasized that the players needed to represent national duty over franchise league commitments. Because of that, the franchises were forced to participate in the knockouts without the core English players such as Jos Buttler and Phil Salt.
For example, England skipper Jos Buttler, who was the core opening batter and the highest run scorer for Rajasthan Royals, voiced his opinion before the conclusion of the group-stage matches. He talked about his disappointment saying that the bilateral matches should not be scheduled during the Indian Premier League.
Unfortunately, Rajasthan Royals got knocked out in the 2nd Qualifier round against Sunrisers Hyderabad without the presence of their key player. Although Tom Kohler-Cadmore was an alternative option as an opening pair with Yashasvi Jaiswal, he couldn’t be a perfect replacement for Buttler. This is because Tom Kohler managed to score just 48 runs in 3 innings with his best score of 20 runs in the season.
Franchise Officials Meeting with BCCI CEO: A Request to Take Strict Action Against Overseas Players
Earlier, the franchise officials had a meeting with BCCI CEO Hemang Amin and expressed their disagreement about players who pulled out of the IPL without any proper reasons. Due to this reason, the team officials requested that players should face severe consequences for their actions such as being banned from the future IPL seasons.
This shows how the issue has reached a peak level by requesting strict actions against the irresponsible players.
Moreover, the IPL team owners don’t want the BCCI to get involved in deciding the pay scale of players to perform well. Rather, the franchises demand that freedom should be granted to determine the players’ salaries as well as to manage their team’s operations and finances.

Conclusion
As the much-awaited meeting between BCCI and franchise owners took place on July 31, a new twist arose by paving the way for a heated debate about the future of the IPL mega auction.
According to the latest reports, several IPL team owners including KKR’s Shah Rukh Khan were against the mega auction taking place. They demanded a mini-auction to have the benefit of more retentions.
As a new chapter opens up with a debate of the IPL mega auction vs mini-auction, the BCCI’s meeting on Wednesday night remains inconclusive with no solution on many agendas that were supposed to be discussed during the event.
Since the meeting took an interesting turn, the BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that the Board will proceed with these recommendations. He stated that this would be a crucial step to communicate with the IPL Governing Council for further discussion and scrutiny before finalizing the IPL player codes of conduct. It is expected that the BCCI will provide an official update regarding details of the governing council meeting in the forthcoming days.
Overall, the BCCI aims to take care of the issue regarding foreign players withdrawing from the league and tries to maintain professionalism and equality of teams, thereby ensuring a successful and competitive nature of the next seasons of the tournament.
