Fortune Barishal Seeks BPL 2026 Reschedule Amid Preparation Issues

The defending champions of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Fortune Barishal, have placed a crucial request to the governing body of the BPL: they would be demanding that the next 2026 season of the BPL be postponed. The reason for this is primarily due to their inability to prepare in the limited time available for the tournament.

The league itself is now scheduled to launch in mid-December 2025, with only five teams in a smaller lineup. In addition to this, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has invited Expressions of Interest (EOI) from business organizations that wish to acquire the franchise rights for a minimum of five successive seasons, spanning from the 12th to the 16th edition of the tournament.

Why Fortune Barishal Wants the BPL 2026 Rescheduled

Fortune Barishal owner Mizanur Rahman has openly said that their squad has too many financial and logistical issues to prepare on such short notice. Getting a competitive team ready requires sorting out funds, getting players, and arranging all the requisite things, something he feels cannot be done realistically within only one or one-and-a-half months. Mizanur reiterated that even if they work around the clock for 24 hours a day, the time given is not sufficient to properly assemble the team and prepare accordingly for the tournament.

He clarified that the team is not rejecting playing in the BPL 2026; instead, they are seeking an extension of the schedule so that they have sufficient time to prepare.

It is essential, he believes, not only for Barishal but for other veteran teams as well. He added that less experienced or newer teams may still be able to play under such conditions, but a team like Fortune Barishal, being high-level and having expectations as a defending champion, should not have to make a compromise regarding the quality of participation. Mizanur proposed that the tournament could be moved to a later date, for example, April or May, to enable all teams to better prepare and preserve the competitive integrity of the tournament.

BCB’s Position and the BPL Governing Council’s Response

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has started a transparent and merit-based process of owning the franchises and made the announcement for proceeding with the league with five teams from mid-December to mid-January as planned. The BCB has shortlisted ten possible regions where the franchises can be located, such as Barishal, Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Khulna, and others, and mentioned that at least five suitable EOIs will be taken into consideration for the upcoming BPL season.

Even after it received Fortune Barishal’s request for deferment, the BPL Governing Council so far stands firm on its previous confirmation that the competition will proceed according to schedule. They stress preserving the schedule in order to have the flow of the tournament and stakeholder commitments remain intact. The BCB also focused on its initiatives to make franchise ownership a fair exercise over the next five seasons in order to stabilize the future of the league.

Team Dynamics and Tamim Iqbal’s Role

Rumors first spread about Fortune Barishal boycotting the BPL, primarily based on comments from team captain Tamim Iqbal, who declared a boycott of cricket operations under the newly elected BCB President Aminul Islam. But Mizanur Rahman put the brakes on these rumors, assuring once again that they are in accordance with the spirit of the game and call for greater preparation time only. He also stated that he will try to persuade Tamim Iqbal to join the team in full capacity in the coming season, reaffirming that an early boycott or pullout is not the plan of the team.

Reasons Behind the Request and Its Impact

The primary cause of Fortune Barishal’s appeal is the extremely tight window from announcement to tournament commencement. Cricket leagues like the BPL also consume a lot of time to finalize deals with players, organize sponsorships, organize logistics, and also offer conditioning of players and development of tactics of the team. An improved timeline threatens the severity of the competition, both of the personalities, and the interests of fans.

Fortune Barishal, within the framework of its organizational structure, the rescheduling call is an indicator of the work on the balance between sporting integrity and commercial interests. Although the BCB initiative of streamlining the franchises into five teams is aimed at stabilizing the structure of the league and offering reliable ownership, the tight deadline poses a challenge to the well-established franchises that are used to extensive preparations. Re-scheduling would allow such teams to turn up their A-game and therefore increase the overall level and integrity of the BPL.

Nevertheless, the recent move made by the BCB to stick to the schedule suggests that it is ready to maintain the calendar of the competition and not to postpone it. This may have been motivated by greater projects on television rights, sponsorship activities, and other events in the calendar.
