Team India’s captain, Shubman Gill, confidently said that Virat Kohli will play a key role in the 2027 World Cup.
The 26-year-old has ended the speculations over Kohli’s ODI future. Gill cited that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will remain the backbone of the Indian batting line-up based on their long-term consistency, proven match-winning performances, and ability to adapt to different conditions.
Despite Gill’s supporting statement towards Ro-Ko, it seems only Kohli’s ODI future is safe.
While Virat’s place in the team seems to be confirmed, speculations increase about Rohit’s retirement as he is reported to play his last ODI match at Lord’s. This news continues to spread like wildfire following Rohit’s subpar performance in back-to-back ODIs against England.
Rohit and Kohli: The Backbone of India’s Batting Line-Up
Ahead of the press conference in the opening ODI of the 3-match series against England, Shubman Gill explained the significance of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the squad:
“Yeah! There is no doubt that Rohit Bhai and Virat Bhai have been the Indian batting line-up’s backbone for the past decade. Their valuable experience will remain a core part of our team. Their contributions over the past decade in different conditions have been exceptional, as they have consistently performed in countless matches and different tournaments.
Just the day before yesterday, I discussed the World Cup 2027 plans with him (Kohli). We talked about crucial factors such as the best team combinations, which players should be part of the squad, and where each player should fit within the team line-up,” Gill said.
Shubman Gill’s Statement: A Big Boost For Virat Kohli
Although Virat Kohli failed to make an impact with the bat in the opening ODI, he returned to form by scoring a brisk 65-run knock off 66 balls (including 8 fours) at a strike rate of 98.48. The run-machine once again proves that his presence at the No.3 spot in India’s batting order remains valuable in modern ODI cricket.
Kohli’s innings proved essential for India to accelerate the team’s net run rate (NRR). At one stage, it seemed Virat’s presence would steer his team to post a 300-or-350+ total. Following his dismissal, India’s batting line-up was wrapped up for a mere total of 233 in 44 overs.
3-Match ODI Series vs England a rehearsal for the 2027 World Cup?
Shubman Gill considers the ongoing 3-match ODI series against England as a crucial rehearsal to determine the team’s combination that suits South African pitches well.
The Indian skipper wanted to finalize the best playing XI combination without disturbing the core unit of players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul.
Gill is reported to have collaborated with Kohli, focusing on India’s long-term plans for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.
He was frequently spotted discussing with Kohli and seeking suggestions from the experienced player during the opening ODI against England. Whether it be the on-field placements or the subsequent overs assigned to bowlers, Virat has played a major role in improving Gill’s captaincy in the Birmingham ODI.
As a balanced batting and bowling line-up is expected for challenging conditions in South Africa, Gill cited that the management is planning a bold strategy to form a group with a maximum of youngsters and a few experienced stars.
Munaf Patel’s Mirroring Statement to Shubman Gill
Former Indian pacer Munaf Patel echoed Shubman Gill’s sentiment, suggesting that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should play in the ODI World Cup 2027:
“See! Without these two players on the team, you cannot win the World Cup. If there are still any hopes of lifting the World Cup title, then it is impossible without them,” Munaf said.
Harsh Reality: Would Kohli Play the 2027 World Cup If Rohit Retires?
Amidst the increasing news of Rohit Sharma’s ODI cricket retirement, it is unlikely that Virat Kohli would play the 2027 World Cup without his long-time teammate.
According to the fresh reports, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar agreed that Virat Kohli could be the frontrunner to play in the 2027 World Cup, given his form and fitness.
In other words, Kohli seems to earn automatic qualification for the ICC’s prestigious tournament, but not Rohit.
Hitman’s ODI career seems to be in jeopardy as multiple reports claim that the ongoing England tour could be the former skipper’s last international appearance. If such happens, then Kohli would also opt for retirement from international cricket. This is because Virat’s Test retirement came five days after Rohit’s announcement, and the same scenario could repeat once again in ODIs too. With less than 15 months remaining for the next World Cup, it remains to be seen if Ro-Ko together can be part of India’s plans or if only Kohli remains the integral player for the high-profile tournament.
