Bangladesh men’s team pace bowler Taskin Ahmed faces the uncertainty of participating in the T20 World Cup 2026. A knee injury ruled out the 30-year-old for the remainder of the Dhaka Capitals’ fixture for the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2025-26.
Taskin recently missed out on Dhaka’s fixture against Noakhali Express at the Sylhet Cricket Stadium on January 11, 2026 (Sunday).
With three weeks away for the 10th edition of the T20 World Cup 2026 to commence, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) physio assured a speedy recovery.
‘Not a Serious Issue’: BCB Physio
Bayjedul Islam Bayezid, the BCB physio, confidently stated that Taskin Ahmed’s speedy recovery and explained the non-severity of the injury:
“No! There is no need to worry. The injury is not very severe. Earlier, we worked on such a knee injury for more than 2.5 years from 2014 to 2016. Currently, he has traveled to Dhaka to undergo a routine check-up, and then the issue will be sorted out,” Bayezid said.
Dhaka Capitals Skipper About Taskin Ahmed’s Injury
Mohammad Mithun, the Dhaka Capitals captain, clarified that Taskin Ahmed requires a short break to recover from his injury:
“Yeah! The physio is concerned about his absence (referring to Taskin). Currently, he is not completely fit enough to play all forms of cricket matches. He went to Dhaka to undergo a scan. However, he wasn’t available for this game.
As far as I know, the unofficial news is that he might still play for Dhaka only if the injury isn’t severe,” Mithun explained.
Taskin Ahmed’s Performance in BPL 2025-26
In 5 matches of BPL 2025-26, Taskin Ahmed managed to grab only 3 wickets at an average of 34.33 and an economy of 9.77. His notable bowling figures this season include 1/28 in 4 overs against Noakhali Express on January 07 (Wednesday).
New Update About Taskin Ahmed’s Fitness
Bangladesh chief physician Debashish Chowdhury, the chief physician said that the extent of Taskin Ahmed’s injury has worsened:
“Probably! With the Achilles tendon, it is possible to play as several cricketers have done in the past, including Taskin in the Champions Trophy and BPL.
Already, we started treatment and performed an MRI scan on him. These records will be essential if he requires travelling abroad.
At the same time, he could face multiple complications if he keeps playing without proper rest and treatment. This is the main reason we’ve decided to withdraw his participation from all levels of cricket so that he can undergo a proper rehabilitation programme. Also, the consultation with specialists will be done if required,” Debashish said.
3 Potential Candidates Who Can Replace Taskin For the T20 World Cup 2026
Assuming that Taskin Ahmed’s injury worsens ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. In such circumstances, the BCB should follow a cautious approach by considering these three eligible contenders who can be the potential replacement for the experienced pacer:
1. Hasan Mahmud
- Current leading wicket-taker of BPL 2025-26 (14 wickets in 8 matches).
- Similar bowling style to Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Taskin Ahmed.
- Controlled rhythm and pace in his bowling attack.
2. Ripon Mondol
- Currently the fourth-highest wicket-taker of BPL 2025-26 (updated as of January 13, 2026). Claimed 13 wickets in 6 matches at an average of 15.53.
- Ability to contribute as a reliable pacer and make handy contributions as a tailender.
- Has the wicket-taking abilities despite an economy of 8.60.
- Adds aggression and fresh energy to the pace bowling attack, particularly in T20 cricket.
3. Mohammad Saifuddin
- Grabbed 6 wickets in 7 matches of BPL 2025-26.
- Ability to restrict the opponent team batters from compiling huge runs despite having less wicket-taking abilities.
- Reliable as a handy batter and adds depth to the team’s lower-order batting unit.

Final Opinion
Dhaka Capitals currently face a double blow with Taskin Ahmed’s absence. The Mohammed Mithun-led side is experiencing a grueling campaign in BPL 2025-26. With 2 wins out of 8 games, Dhaka is on the verge of getting eliminated from this season before the knockouts.
BPL’s next phase will commence in Dhaka from January 15 onwards after the conclusion of the fixtures in Sylhet on January 13. However, Taskin’s fitness remains a concern as there is no clarity on his comeback into competitive cricket.
Even though the potential replacements like Hasan Mahmud, Ripon Mondol, and Mohammad Saifuddin aren’t part of Bangladesh’s main squad, they remain as the core contenders. BCB still has the option to choose either one of them as a replacement to suffice for Taskin Ahmed’s absence in the T20 World Cup 2026.
So far, the timeline for the veteran Bangladeshi pacer is not yet confirmed. Suppose Taskin is deemed fit to return; it is uncertain if he will take the risk of worsening his knee injury.
