The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) on August 19, 2025, officially declared the 15-member team that would take part in the 2025 Asia Cup. Some big names and emerging talents were axed under the guidance of Suryakumar Yadav, the captain, and Shubman Gill, the vice-captain, whereas some key stars, namely Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer, did not make it to the team.
Performance Doesn’t Always Guarantee Selection
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer both had splendid form before the announcement of the squad. But the overall IPL 2025 left Shreyas Iyer in particular with a brilliant season, 604 runs in 17 games, with a strike rate of more than 175. In a similar vein, Jaiswal was a contender to get a position in the top order, where he had performed well at domestic and international levels. Neither, however, made the 15-man team to the Asia Cup, though Jaiswal was drafted into the reserves, and Iyer was not at all.
BCCI’s Analysis and Priorities
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressed the issue in a press conference, pointing out several crucial factors:
- Squad Balance and Team Structure
The Asia Cup is played as a T20 long where balance in the team is highly essential. BCCI decided to focus on a combination of hard-hitting batsmen, utility all-rounders, and all-terrain bowlers. Abhishek Sharma was selected due to his terrific T20 performance as well as his contribution as a left-arm spinner, which increases the versatility of the team. This directly impacted the probability of Jaiswal because the team could only accommodate one left-handed opener, including Shubman Gill, who was selected based on his consistency and vice-captaincy responsibilities. - Recent Form and Player Versatility
BCCI did not only take into account IPL statistics but also current performance and adaptability. In case, Abhishek Sharma has got 279 T20I runs this year and at a strike rate of 219.68 as well, with bowling options. Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma are also dependable T20I batters in recent times. Such middle-order and opening slot competition implies that Jaiswal and Iyer had intense competition when they were trying to gain this middle-order and opening selection. - Role of Leadership and Experience
Shubman Gill replacing Jaiswal has to do with the due position of vice-captain and his contribution as an opener. There was a focus on the leadership continuity in BCCI, and so Gill had a shot at settling before the World T20. - No Fault of the Excluded Players
Ajit Agarkar expressed his opinion clearly that the skipping of Shreyas Iyer was never because he had not done something, or there was a shortage in his performance skills. It is only the number of squads that limits and puzzle fitting to have match combinations. He said, It’s his fault or ours. The thing is that in the team, there can be chosen only 15 players, and now he has to warm the bench to get his chance. The reason that Iyer was left out was a stable top order in which the selectors believed that there was no clear opening that he would be able to fit into.
Bowling All-Rounders on Priority
One of the key trends in modern T20 cricket is the importance of multi-dimensional players. Abhishek Sharma edges ahead because he can bowl left-arm spin, a valuable asset, especially on subcontinental pitches in the UAE, where the Asia Cup is hosted this year. Similarly, the Indian think-tank appears to be making room for batters who can bowl, bolstering options for match-ups and injury cover.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Remains in the Reserves
It’s important to highlight that Jaiswal hasn’t been written off completely; he is among the five standby players announced by the BCCI. If any main squad member becomes unavailable due to injury or fitness issues, Jaiswal could come in as a replacement. This keeps the door open for him as the team heads into the busy international calendar.

Shreyas Iyer: Victim of Squad Combination and Timing
In the case of Shreyas Iyer, the plot becomes a little more difficult. Although he scored prolific runs in both the IPL 2025 and played a great game on the national level, the selectors found that he did not fit into the blueprint of the Indian championship team in the Asia Cup, as compared to the current middle-order which had inflated stars in Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, and Sanju Samson. Indeed, Iyer did not receive a reserve place, too, which is indicative of the fact that the BCCI was very confident in the top-order and the middle-order combination that they had settled with.
