Ravichandran Ashwin, the best and most successful spin bowler in India, has shocked, most recently, any ardent cricketer and analyst when he was not auctioned at the International League T20 (ILT20) held in 2025. The outrageous event was a controversial one in the world of cricket forums, particularly because Ashwin had the highest reserve price of USD 120,000 at the beginning of the auction.
The reaction to this turn of affairs was a mix of shock, rumor-mongering, and admiration for Ashwin’s attitude towards his worth and career choices.
Ashwin’s Silence Broken: What Did He Say?
After staying back in the first round of the ILT20 auction, Ashwin chose to stay away from the rest of the rounds. In his own words, he said categorically that the self-worth that he valued was not open to negotiation. Ashwin explained, That is the minimum I wanted as a price, and I am okay not playing at this stage of my career when my value is not given. This is an indication of Ashwin’s confidence in his value and unwillingness to bargain on his valuation even after the shock of auctions where no franchise would sign him at that price.
Ashwin also made it public that he had talks with the Sydney Thunder franchise of the Big Bash League (BBL), for whom he has signed to play the entire season. Given the calendar for the ILT20 and the seasons of the BBL in doubt, he expressed a willingness to complete this BBL commitment.
As a matter of fact, he had come to the ILT20 auction with the firm intention of withdrawing even before it began, but attended out of principle and respect towards the league. He was firm on his base price and decided to focus on the BBL season instead.
Why Did Ashwin Go Unsold?
Ashwin’s remaining unsold in the ILT20 auction surprised many because of his extensive T20 career, like many successful years in IPL, and his contribution to Indian cricket history. There are some important reasons why franchises might have ignored him:
- High Base Price: Ashwin had bid the highest base price amongst all the players at the auction with a base price of USD 120,000. The teams had a small budget (around USD 800,000) to formulate balanced teams, and applying a large chunk of it on a mature player like Ashwin left fewer options of freedom for other choices.
- Emphasis on Youth and Fitness: Enhanced franchise cricket focuses more on the youth players who will provide longevity, besides versatile bodily presentation. It might have been considered that Ashwin, 38, was not an ILT20 long-term asset.
- Conflicts in Scheduling: the fact that Ashwin was exclusive to the Sydney Thunder in the BBL at the same time as the ILT20 schedule made some franchises reluctant about his availability.
- Strategic Team Makeup: The better finishers and all-rounders who can blast the ball are in demand in most franchises owing to the dynamics of the T20 game. Brilliant as Ashwin is, the teams could have been looking around seeking such players who could better fit their requirements of aggressive cricket and overall skill.
Fans and Expert Reactions
The social media and cricketing forums’ reaction was largely one of surprise and admiration for Ashwin. The fact that such a player, having won awards, was not chosen by the fans was outrageous, experts insisted on the method of the auction:
- Some believed franchises underrated experience over youth, evidencing a change in priorities in T20 cricket.
- Former international cricketers and analysts like Simon Doull felt that Ashwin might have retreated on purpose, which was a misinterpretation of the auction scenario, given that teams still had considerable budgets.
- Others appreciated Ashwin because of his integrity to his valuation line and refusal to relinquish on his value, exhibiting self-worth and career consciousness.
- The unsold status also had accompanying discourse on shifting franchise league dynamics, where scheduling conflicts and hefty base rates can play a massive role in player demand.

What’s Next for Ashwin?
With the ILT20 doors seemingly shut for now, Ashwin will be focusing on his whole Big Bash League season with Sydney Thunder. He was excited to play for this side, given their leadership and game style correlation with his game style. Ashwin is also planning to play in other T20 tournaments like the Hundred tournament in England and play for India in tournaments like the Hong Kong Sixes.
