India’s Rare T20I Feat Achieved in England: Only Two Captains Led The Team to Glory!

T20I success story: Team India’s white-ball tour of England commenced on July 01st 2026, starting with the 5-match T20I series. However, the series opener was abandoned at the Riverside ground due to heavy rain. The tour, scheduled to conclude on July 19, comprising 5 T20Is and 3 ODIs, marks the first white-ball series in England post the Rohit-Kohli retirement era in the shortest format.

With the remaining three T20Is slated to take place on July 07th, 09th and 11th, India needs to win 3 of them to secure a series win. By doing so, Shreyas Iyer would become the third captain to record his T20I success story in England.

Surprisingly, the former legendary skipper MS Dhoni doesn’t feature in the list, having lost the one-off T20I series back in 2011 and 2014.

Let’s discover the two iconic Indian captains who led India to T20I series glory in England.

Kohli and Rohit: Two Indian Captains Who Won T20I Series in England

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are the only two Indian skippers to have won a T20I series in England. Under Kohli’s captaincy in 2018 and Rohit’s leadership role in 2022, Team India played a 3-match T20I series and won both of them by a 2-1 margin.

2018 England Tour: Virat Kohli

India’s multi-format tour of England featured 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs and 5 Tests. Virat Kohli became the first Indian captain to lead the team to its maiden T20I series win on English soil.

Rohit Sharma bagged the Player of the Series award as he scored 137 runs in 3 matches. His unbeaten 56-ball-century in the series-decider T20I clash at the County Ground steered his team to a 7-wicket win while chasing a mammoth 199-run target.

Hardik Pandya (6 wickets), Kuldeep Yadav, and Umesh Yadav (5 wickets each) concluded as the leading wicket-takers in the 3-match T20I series.

2022 England Tour: Rohit Sharma

Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, Team India sealed the T20I series in the first two matches by 50 runs and 49 runs respectively, leaving the third one to spare, which England won by 17 runs.

Interestingly, the T20 World Cup 2026-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav concluded as the leading run scorer of the series at that time, having amassed 171 runs at a 200+ strike rate.

Despite Hardik Pandya ranking as India’s leading wicket-taker in the series (5 wickets in 2 matches), Bhuvneshwar Kumar was honored as the player of the series for taking 4 wickets in 2 matches.

Big Challenge For Shreyas Iyer on the England Tour 2026

The ongoing England tour holds great importance for Shreyas Iyer to secure his maiden T20I series win as a captain. Most importantly, the team is keen to heal the wounds of a humiliating whitewash defeat in the recently concluded T20I series in Ireland.

Although the squad featured newbies like Prince Yadav, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and Suryansh Shedge, the reigning champions retained their core line-up from the T20 World Cup 2026 for the Ireland and England tour.

However, the captaincy transition from Suryakumar Yadav to Shreyas Iyer mattered a lot as India’s inability to perform on overseas pitches was exposed.

The challenge furthermore intensifies for Iyer to carry forward the legacy that India built under Ro-Ko’s captaincy.

Winning a T20I series in England’s backyard wouldn’t be a cakewalk unless Team India comes up with a strong and well-balanced batting and bowling line-up.

Pressure to Include Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in India’s Playing XI

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Shreyas Iyer continued to receive backlash for benching the sensational teenage batsman Vaibhav Sooryavanshi throughout the Ireland series.

Experts believe that the outcome of the Ireland tour could have been different if Sooryavanshi batted as an opener.

Likewise, in the series opener against England, the 15-year-old talented batsman was once again dropped from the playing XI. India managed to set a 190-run target before rain played spoilsport to the game.

Final Opinion: Can Iyer Join Rohit and Kohli’s T20I Success Story in England?

Despite a difficult start to the T20I captaincy with a 0-2 loss in Ireland, Shreyas Iyer still has a fair chance to add his name after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in a rare T20I series triumph in England.

Having shown his leadership prowess in the IPL, he led the Delhi Capitals (DC) to their only IPL final in 2020 and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the championship title in 2024. Also, Punjab Kings (PBKS) under his captaincy progressed to the IPL 2025 final, making him the only captain to lead three different IPL franchises to the final.

As Shreyas is leading Team India for the first time after a two-year gap in T20Is, it remains to be seen how he establishes his authority as the third Indian skipper to win a T20I series in England after Kohli and Rohit.
