Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been the core performer for Australia in the white ball cricket, including his contributions to several match-winning performances for his side. He recently expressed his desire to make a comeback into the red-ball format after seven years by hoping to take part in the forthcoming tour to Sri Lanka in 2025 featuring a two-match test series.
Although he was included in Victoria’s squad for the Sheffield Shield earlier this year, the right-handed batter was able to score just 24 runs across two innings against Queensland and was dropped from the playing XI for the remaining games.
Moreover, he was expected to play in the practice test match representing the Prime Minister’s XI against India but had to forfeit citing a hamstring injury.
Based on this fact, the former Australian opening batsman David Warner launched a counterattacking response to his ex-teammate Maxwell ruling out the options of his return to the longest format of cricket. He says that if Maxwell had participated in most of the Sheffield Shield’s matches, it would be appropriate to consider him in the discussion.
Warner suggests that having little experience by playing just 7 test matches, the spin bowling all-rounder doesn’t deserve to win his spot in Australia’s test squad.
Glenn Maxwell’s Opinion to Make Test Comeback for Australia
Highlighting his previous experience, Glenn Maxwell recalls his strengths in test cricket:
“Yeah! The one week of practice and training sessions in different conditions ahead of the single test match during the Sri Lankan tour in 2022 was the most enjoyable experience. It was extremely fun working out with different techniques and trying out them against your teammates. My strategy will be the same compared to the previous tests. Being aware of my strengths, I can ensure to implement the best defense techniques as well as find out the options to score runs,” Maxwell said.
David Warner Explains Why Glenn Maxwell Doesn’t Qualify to Play Test Cricket
In the latest conversation with CODE Sports, David Warner voiced his opinion about Glenn Maxwell’s possible return to the Australian test squad for the upcoming Sri Lankan Tour:
“NO! He (Maxwell) doesn’t have the eligibility to earn an opportunity to play test cricket. A player not being selected by his Sheffield Shield team has no chance of deserving a spot in tests. If you really desire it, then it is recommended to gain experience in four-day cricket contests.
Unless a player comes forward to prove their worth in club cricket, they cannot grab the chance to play test cricket at a higher level.
It wouldn’t be appropriate to raise your hand to declare saying that I want to just be part of that. One must be ready to invest their hard work and efforts to accomplish their goals rather than simply saying I want to play in Australia,” David Warner said.
Maxwell’s 7 Test Match Appearances for Australia: March 2013 to December 2017
Out of 7 test matches, Glenn Maxwell scored 339 runs in 14 innings at an average of 26.08 and a strike rate of 59.47 which includes his highest score of 104 runs.
As a spin bowler, he took 8 wickets in 9 innings averaging at 42.62 at an economy of 4.43 consisting of his best bowling figures of 4-127.
The 36-year-old Aussie cricketer played his last test match against Bangladesh at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram between 04th and 08th December 2017.
Glenn Maxwell’s Next Assignment: Conclusive Facts
Currently, Glenn Maxwell is gearing up for the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 representing his team Melbourne Stars under the captaincy of Marcus Stoinis, and will be spotted in action in the season opener against Perth Scorchers on 15th December 2024 (Sunday). The 14th edition of the BBL takes place till 27th January 2025 (Monday) and the Sri Lankan tour commences two days after the conclusion of the tournament’s final match (on 29th January 2025).
It wouldn’t be easy for Maxwell to secure his place in Australia’s test squads among other talented players such as Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Pat Cummins, Steven Smith, and several others. At the same time, his ability to play against spinners maximizes his chances of playing test cricket after seven years.
Due to his limited appearance in test cricket, several questions have been raised about his increasing interest in the red ball format. Furthermore, the doubts have been amplified about his capability to play test cricket after the selectors excluded him from Australia’s squad for the previous edition of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023 in India due to injury.
Finally, it remains uncertain if Maxwell will be part of the red ball series against Sri Lanka, which would decide Australia’s fate to participate in the WTC (World Test Championship) 2025 final at Lords in June.
