Asian Games 2026: Suryakumar or Gill Snubbed in BCCI’s Longlist to IOA

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly planning a major transition in the Indian T20I squad leadership. With the Asian Games 2026 in Japan and the West Indies T20I series facing a direct scheduling clash, the Indian cricket board faces a gruelling task of determining two strong T20I squads simultaneously.

Shockingly, two noteworthy names are missing from the 30-member probable squad. It includes the T20 World Cup 2026 winning captain Suryakumar Yadav, as well as the test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill.

Notably, the young sensational batter, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, has been included in the men’s probables with Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma emerging as contenders for the captaincy role.

BCCI’s list submitted to the Indian Olympic Association features a mix of young and seasoned stars. (IOA). Let’s find out why Suryakumar and Gill aren’t part of India’s Asian Games 2026 plans.

Reasons why Suryakumar and Gill Are Omitted From Asian Games 2026

Here are the key reasons why Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill are sidelined from the Asian Games 2026:

1. Scheduling Conflict with India’s Home T20I Series vs West Indies

The Asian Games 2026 Olympics in Japan is scheduled between September 19 (Saturday) and October 04 (Sunday). Meanwhile, the West Indies will tour India for the white-ball series (3 ODIs and 5 T20Is) scheduled between September 27 (Sunday) and October 17 (Saturday).

With Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav expected to lead the squad in ODIs and T20Is, respectively, they haven’t been selected for the Asian Games.

As BCCI must assemble two separate squads, key players like SKY and Gill are reserved for the bilateral duties.

2. Form and Future Planning

While Shubman Gill was impressive with his batting performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Suryakumar Yadav’s recent dip in batting form poses questions over his captaincy and long-term plans with the team.

Gill, who is currently the ODI and test captain of the Indian squad, is likely to be appointed as T20I captain, and BCCI could preserve him for long-term commitments.

The forthcoming West Indies series could serve as an opportunity to bring Gill back into India’s T20I squad and plan for a leadership transition.

So, it is likely that Suryakymar would no longer be in India’s plans for the next T20 World Cup and the Olympic Games in 2028. So, his exclusion from the Asian Games seems a forgone conclusion.

3. Squad Strategy

As per the 30-member longlist submitted to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the Asian Games team is likely to be led by Tilak Varma, Shreyas Iyer, or Sanju Samson. So, there won’t be any senior stars who could take up the leadership role.

4. Common Players in ODI and T20I Squad

As some players such as Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, and others commonly feature in both ODI and T20I squads, the Asian Games between September 19 and October 06 leaves selectors clueless to determine the best two teams.
