Especially, the 49-year-old retired English batsman revealed his prediction after the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) lifted its maiden trophy in the 2nd season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

Finally, Royal Challengers Bangalore concluded its 16-year drought for lifting a trophy when Smriti Mandhana’s led side secured a massive victory against Delhi Capitals (DC) by 8 wickets in the WPL 2024 finals at Arun Jaitley stadium. Indeed, it is RCB’s historic win to clinch a trophy across all leagues.

Three spinners of RCB took nine wickets in the WPL 2024 finals namely:

  • Shreyanka Patil: 12-4 in 3.3 overs
  • Sophie Molineux: 20-3 in 4 overs

At one stage, DC were sailing at 64-0 in 7 overs. After Sophie Molineux dismissed Shafali Verma (44 runs), Delhi Capitals lost wickets regularly. RCB wrapped up DC’s innings for 113-10 in 18.3 overs.

RCB gave a perfect response by chasing down the target in the final over (115-2 in 19.3 overs) with three balls remaining. Moreover, the women’s team clinched the trophy in their first attempt at the WPL finals. Whereas, the men’s team have been into the IPL finals three times in 2009, 2011 and 2016 and is yet to lift their maiden IPL trophy.

Now it’s time for Faf du Plessis and his men to go with a bang on their IPL 2024 campaign. Having lost the IPL 2024 opening match with Chennai Super Kings; Royal Challengers Bengaluru playing its 2nd match today vs Punjab Kings.

What are the Jinx that RCB needs to overcome and double their celebrations in IPL 2024?

There are chances for RCB to double their celebrations, but they need to break these different jinxes that have haunted them for many years:

1. Playoffs against Chennai Super Kings:

After winning the semi-finals against Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2009, Royal Challengers Bangalore continued to struggle in subsequent editions against the same team in the playoffs as shown below:

2011Qualifier 1Lost by 6 wickets
2011FinalLost by 58 runs
2015Qualifier 2Lost by 3 wickets

2. Losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Playoffs and Final match:

It all started in 2009 when Deccan Chargers (changed to Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL 2009 final match. Only in 2010, did RCB win against DC for the 3rd Place Play-off (as a losing semi-finalist).

In 2016, RCB lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final despite being the strongest team of the season. In 2020, both RCB and SRH encountered each other in the playoffs. Once again RCB lost to SRH in the eliminator round by 6 wickets.

This is another jinx Royal Challengers Bangalore needs to break against the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Can 2024 be RCB’s year in IPL? Overall Facts

Despite being a part of the tournament in the inaugural edition of 2008, Royal Challengers Bangalore is one of the three teams that haven’t yet won even a single edition.

RCB is one of the most popular franchises in the entire IPL history with a huge loyal fan base. Over the years, the team had all-time great players like Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and Ab de Villiers.

Recently, the franchise included Alzarri Joseph and Yash Dayal in the previous year’s IPL auction to intensify the fast-bowling attack. Similarly, Cameron Green and Tom Curran can bolster the all-rounder’s department.

However, RCB’s current squad still lacks balance due to the average middle order. The top-order batsmen like Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell need to rise above limitations. It is the only option to support the middle order and overcome all their obstacles to win the finals.

Finally, Michael Vaughan about RCB hopes that the Faf du Plessis-led side can assemble all the pieces of the unsolved puzzle to qualify through the playoffs and win the IPL 2024 final.
