Which Batsman Has The Most Centuries In T20 World Cup History?

Most Century In T20 World Cup: Former West Indies legendary batsman Chris Gayle holds the most centuries in the T20 World Cup history. Out of his 33 matches in the T20 World Cup, Chris Gayle struck 2 centuries with an overall of 965 runs, having an average of 34.46 and a strike rate of 142.75. It includes his highest score of 117 runs against the hosts South Africa in the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup.

Moreover, Chris Gayle was the first international batsman to score a century in the ICC T20 World Cup.

Interestingly, his 2nd century in just 48 balls against England became the fastest century in the Men’s T20 World Cup ever.

Chris Gayle’s century in the maiden edition of the T20 World Cup was the highest for five years until the former New Zealand cricketer Brendon McCullum surpassed the record against Bangladesh in the 2012 edition. As of now, Brendon McCullum with his best score of 123 runs from 72 balls (including 11 fours and 7 sixes), leads at the top position in the list of highest-scoring individual batsmen in the T20 World Cup.

At the same time, Brendon McCullum couldn’t break Chris Gayle’s record of fastest century in the T20 World Cup. It is because the former New Zealand batsman reached his century in 51 balls.

Despite Chris Gayle having the most centuries in the T20 World Cup, he remains the 3rd batsman with the most number of runs in the shortest format of World Cup, behind two other great cricketers in the list namely:

  • Virat Kohli (INDIA):  1141 runs in 25 innings with his highest score of 89 runs
  • Mahela Jayawardene (SRI LANKA): 1016 runs in 31 innings with his highest score of 100 runs

Chris Gayle’s most centuries in the T20 World Cup

Here is how Chris Gayle achieved the most centuries in the T20 World Cup by delivering his exceptional performance against South Africa in 2007 and England in the 2016 editions:

1. West Indies vs South Africa 2007: 117 runs

On 11th September 2007, the West Indies posted a huge total of 205-6 against South Africa at Johannesburg. Chris Gayle with his unbeaten knock of 117 runs from 57 balls (including 7 fours and 10 sixes), single-handedly propelled his team to a huge total. Also, he became the fastest batsman to score a century in just 50 balls.

However, Gayle’s efforts went in vain as these two South African batsmen helped South Africa with a comfortable chase and steered their team to a total of 208-2 in 17.4 overs:

  • Herschelle Gibbs: 90 runs from 55 balls (including 14 fours and 2 sixes)
  • Justin Kemp: 46 runs from 22 balls (including 5 fours and 2 sixes)

The 118-run partnership between Herschelle Gibbs and Justin Kemp guided South Africa in a high-scoring thriller with 8 wickets and 14 balls remaining.

2. West Indies vs England 2016: 100 runs

Chasing a target of 183 runs against England at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, West Indies lost two early wickets of Johnson Charles (0 from 2 balls) and Marlon Samuels (37 balls).

Once again, Chris Gayle single-handedly fought against England with his 2nd century in the T20 World Cup. He scored 100 runs from just 48 balls (including 5 fours and 11 sixes).  As a result, Gayle secured the fastest century ever in the T20 World Cup by surpassing his previous record of 50 balls in 2007 against South Africa.

Furthermore, Chris Gayle navigated his team to a thrilling 6-wicket win as West Indies scored 183-4 in 18.1 overs.

Moreover, he achieved the record as the best international batsman with most centuries in T20 World Cup history.  Interestingly, he also achieved the record for smashing the most number of sixes in T20Is after that match (124 sixes to date). Currently, the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has struck the maximum sixes in T20Is (190 sixes).

Which Batsman has the maximum chance to score the most centuries in the T20 World Cup 2024?

So far, none of the batsmen has broken Chris Gayle’s record in the T20 World Cup. Based on the recent performance of the present cricketers and the maximum number of centuries scored in T20 Internationals (T20Is), possibly these four batsmen have the enhanced chances to score the most centuries in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024:

From the above stats, it becomes evident that both Rohit Sharma and Glenn Maxwell have the most number of centuries in T20Is (5 centuries). These two power-hitters can achieve maximum centuries in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

If Suryakumar Yadav recovers from his injury, he too has maximum chances to score maximum centuries in the T20 World Cup 2024. But, his participation in the forthcoming tournament would be confirmed based on how he clears the fitness test.

On the other side, Babar Azam’s consistent performance in PSL 2024 and his earlier T20 records strengthen his chances of breaking Chris Gayle’s record. Recently, Babar surpassed Chris Gayle’s record by becoming the fastest batsman to score 10,000 runs in T20. Consequently, the Pakistani former skipper aims to break another record of Chris Gayle in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
