What will Bangladesh’s Lineup for Asia Cup 2022 Look Like?

Bangladesh Cricket Team, also known as The Tigers, will start their Asia Cup 2022 campaign on 30th August against Afghanistan. The team made it to the finals of the previous edition of the Asia Cup in 2018. They came agonizingly close to winning the finals but fell short against India.

Bangladesh has not been performing at its best in T20Is recently. They were beaten 2-1 by a weak Zimbabwe side in an away T20I series last month. They were also beaten 2-1 by Zimbabwe in the ODI series. But with a new captain and a few fresh faces, the team would look to forget the past and move ahead.

Shakib Al Hasan will lead the side at the Asia Cup 2022. He has been in hot waters recently because of an agreement he signed with a betting company. But he had to terminate his contract with the company after receiving a warning from the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

The Bangladesh team had to endure some injury woes as well. Pace bowler Hasan Mahmud bows out of Asia Cup 2022 due to an ankle injury in training. Wicketkeeper-batsman Nurul Hasan Sohan underwent surgery on his injured finger. So he needs more time to get back to full fitness.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has also appointed a new coach for the team. Former Indian cricketer and Australian spin bowling consultant Sridharan Sriram will be the new coach for the Bangladesh Cricket team. His tenure starts from the Asia Cup 2022.

Shakib’s return to captaincy came as a shock to many Bangladeshi fans. He has quit captaincy in the past to focus on his skills. But for the Asia Cup 2022, he can also seek help from senior players like MahmudUllah Riyad, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mustafizur Rahman.

Bangladesh’s Record in the Asia Cup

So far, Bangladesh has participated in 13 Asia Cup tournaments. It includes 12 in ODI format and 1 in T20I. The previous Asia Cup was played in 2018 in the ODI format. The team reached the finals of that tournament, only to lose against India.

They reached the finals in 2012, 2016, and 2018 editions of the Asia Cup. But they have never won the silverware yet. With the Asia Cup 2022 approaching in a week, the team will be hoping to become the Asian champions for the first time in their history.

They have the perfect balance of youngsters and senior players going into the series. As usual, Shakib Al Hasan will be the key with both bat and ball. But the new captain of the Bangladesh team Shakib Al Hasan has warned that the fans must keep modest expectations from the team for the Asia Cup 2022.

“If you can think practically, our real development as a team can be seen in the upcoming T20I World Cup in three months,” Shakib says.

Bangladesh Squad for the Asia Cup 2022

Bangladesh will be traveling to Dubai with a 17-member squad for the Asia Cup 2022. The left-hand opening batsman Mohammad Naim joins the squad instead of pace bowler Mahmud Hasan. His stellar performance with the bat against West Indies A with the bat earned him a recall.

But the Bangladesh team has not selected an additional pace bowler or a wicketkeeper as replacements. The team departs for Dubai for the Asia Cup 2022 on Tuesday.

They will be having several outdoor training sessions before playing their first game on 30 August against a spirited Afghanistan side. The Afghan side will be looking to bounce back after losing the T20I series against Ireland last month. They are quite capable of causing a few upsets in the tournament.

The Bangladesh team is already without their star wicketkeeper-batsman Liton Das. He suffered a hamstring injury while batting during the recent series against Zimbabwe. He had to leave the ground on a stretcher. Das scored a century in the Asia Cup 2018 final against India and almost took his team home before India fought back and won.

Bangladesh is placed in Group B along with Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. With the T20I World Cup approaching in three months, the Asia Cup 2022 tournament serves as ideal preparation for the Bangladesh Cricket team.

Post Asia Cup 2022, the team will play a T20I tri-series. New Zealand and Pakistan are the other two teams participating in that tournament. It means that the Bangladesh team will be playing against some high-quality teams leading up to the T20I World Cup in Australia.
