Mark Butcher, the former England batsman, believes that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi won’t have guaranteed success in international cricket, particularly in tests. Despite the young lad’s tremendous performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 and receiving a maiden call-up for India, his fitness levels are questioned.
Mark Butcher predicts that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could face a tough time replicating his IPL success at the international level. The 53-year-old confidently stated that many names have emerged on the selectors’ list for a maiden call-up for the national team. Out of which a few of them went on to become great players.
No Guaranteed Success at the International Level? Butcher’s Opinion
During the conversation with SkySports, Mark Butcher explained why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could find it challenging to replicate IPL success at international cricket.
“See! He is just 15 years old now. Several people said the young lad needed to prove his worth at the international level.
None of his current success from IPL guarantees him to be extraordinary on an international stage. But, it is popularly said that one can only marvel at the extraordinary talent without dwelling on too many questions.
Regardless of his IPL performance, people will still question his abilities. He is one such talented player who smashed Pat Cummins and achieved a record for most maximum sixes in a single IPL season,” Butcher said.
Vaibhav surpassed Chris Gayle’s record of smashing the most sixes in an IPL season with 72 sixes to his name in the recently concluded 2026 edition.
Butcher About Sooryavanshi’s Bat Swing Techniques
Mark Butcher couldn’t stop praising Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s batting skills and was impressed with the way he scored runs against all types of bowling attacks:
“Absolutely! It was a delight to watch him bat against different types of bowling. Most importantly, I have noticed several things, such that his bottom hand was around the bottom of the bat.
But I couldn’t notice anything different in the way he maintains his grip. Specifically, his leg movement to initiate the bat swing continues until it disappears, and smacks him in the middle of his spine, which is just purely Sobers’ skill. Just take a look at it if you can, and that is all that I can say.
Watching his batting style was indeed a bit of a throwback moment for me. His way of hovering the bat a little bit and again putting it down back on the floor before rising generates an incredible kinetic force. Most players don’t do this because it is very difficult.
Just look at the way Brian Lara used to pick up the bat, which was impossible for most players. Then what would you do? It looks like the entire thing was absolutely out of control. But, if you can accomplish that, then this technique would certainly work,” Butcher added.
Sooryavanshi’s Batting Style Reminiscent of the West Indies Legend
A few months back, Mark Butcher compared the 15-year-old’s talent with the West Indies legendary batsman Sir Garfield Sobers.
“See! Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s ball striking abilities have been truly exceptional. I have observed his batting skills in the Under-19 World Cup final. The way he swings the bat and strikes the ball at all areas of the ground, the first name that immediately came to my mind was Sir Gary Sobers.
The bat swinging techniques all the way around and the pure commitment to hit the ball as hard as possible reminded me of Sobers.
People from different generations who haven’t seen or had the picture of Garry in their minds can watch him smashing the six sixes at the Swansea off Malcolm Nash back in the 60s. Just watched and my God it was absolutely the same, ” Butcher added.
Ahead of IPL 2026, Sooryavanshi’s 80-ball 175 run knock in the Under-19 World Cup turned the match into one-sided domination. This impressed Butcher to a great extent, and he compared his batting style with the West Indies legend.

Butcher’s Statement: Challenge For Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or Not?
Replicating IPL success in international cricket can be a huge challenge for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi unless he knows how to deal with fame and success at this very young age.
Debuting for Team India at the age of 15 is a dream moment for any youngster like Vaibhav. It is indeed the biggest moment in Indian cricket history.
As the focus shifts towards the young prodigy, he needs to be more cautious, as several top cricketers would be compared to his batting style.
At times, the southpaw would be compared with Sachin Tendulkar. But the reality is that the youngster doesn’t need comparison with reputed cricketers at this premature stage.
As a teenager, it is very difficult to play at an international level against the experienced star cricketers. And suppose Vaibhav manages to create a sensation with his performance, he could definitely become the future of Indian cricket and an inspiration for several youngsters.
