3 most successful Indian captains in T20 World Cup history (2007-2024)
In a competitive sport like cricket, teamwork from the batters, bowlers, and fielders highlights their skills to help their team win a match. However, the role of a captain is crucial for the entire team to be successful, particularly in the shortest format like the Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), where a true leader needs to be alert at all times.
In the ICC T20 World Cup history, there have been a few brilliant Indian captains such as MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. But only one has managed to lift the T20 World Cup trophy since the inaugural edition in 2007.
It’s time to delve deeper into the Indian captains in the T20 World Cup history for the past 17 years starting from 2007 to 2024.
3 Successful Indian Captains in T20 World Cup
Starting from the first season in 2007, the Indian cricket team’s captaincy has passed only twice and these three leaders have exhibited their unique style and creative ideas to lead the team so far:
1. MS Dhoni: 2007 to 2016
The men-in-blue led by the young MS Dhoni created history by winning the first edition of the T20 World Cup held in South Africa in 2007. Team India triumphed against Pakistan in a thrilling final to lift the maiden T20 World Cup trophy. The Indian cricket team equipped with young talents lost just one match in the tournament against New Zealand in the Super Eight stages.
After claiming the defending champions title in 2007, MS Dhoni’s led side failed to reach the semi-finals in three seasons (in 2009, 2010, and 2012), as Team India suffered an elimination in the Super Eight round.
Even in the T20 World Cup 2014 hosted by Bangladesh, MS Dhoni, and his men dominated the whole tournament and stormed into the finals as the unbeaten side before facing a heartbreaking defeat against Sri Lanka.
In the T20 World Cup 2016, MS Dhoni had an opportunity to add ICC silverware to his name, and Team India as hosts had the maximum chance of winning the trophy. Team India’s journey in that tournament started on a losing note against New Zealand. Despite the failure in their opening match, the men-in-blue never gave up and won three games sequentially to enter the semi-finals. However, the West Indies shattered the hopes of Indian fans and cricketers by achieving a 7-wicket victory in the semi-final at Wankhede.
Moreover, the 6th edition of the T20 World Cup in 2016 was the last time when MS Dhoni played for Team India as a captain and player.
2. Virat Kohli: 2021
Despite Virat Kohli’s proven leadership skills in white-ball cricket like the One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), Team India faced a disastrous T20 World Cup campaign in the 2021 edition hosted by the UAE.
Out of five matches, India lost the first two important games against Pakistan and New Zealand in the Super 12 group stages. Despite winning their next three matches against Afghanistan, Scotland, and Namibia, the men-in-blue weren’t able to qualify for the semi-finals. As a result, Virat Kohli’s first stint as a captain in T20 World Cup wasn’t upto the expectations which made him step down as the T20I skipper after the Indian cricket team’s exit from the group stages.
However, Virat Kohli remains one of the greatest Indian captains in T20Is. This is because India won 30 out of 50 matches under Kohli’s captaincy which includes 16 losses, two tied games, and two no-result matches.
3. Rohit Sharma: 2022 to Present (2024)
Indian opening batsman Rohit Sharma led his team till the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2022 played in Australia. In the Super 12 round, Team India won 4 out of 5 games, which included a thrilling victory over Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). However, in the semi-final, England’s 10-wicket victory against India ended the men in blue’s dreams to win the T20 World Cup trophy for 2nd time under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.
Despite losing the T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma is still hailed as the most successful Indian captain. Team India played 55 T20Is under his captaincy and won 43 matches with 12 losses thereby maintaining a success percentage of 78.18.
Interestingly, Rohit Sharma surpassed MS Dhoni’s lifetime record as a captain after securing his 43rd victory against Ireland in the 8th match of the T20 World Cup 2024. As a result, MS Dhoni with 42 winnings, ranks below Rohit Sharma in the list. However, Rohit Sharma remains in fourth position on the list of international captains with the most T20I victories, thereby ranking behind Babar Azam (46 winnings) and the joint record of Brian Masaba and Eoin Morgan (44 winnings each).
