Former Bangladesh skipper Tamim Iqbal was elected as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for a four-year tenure. The 37-year-old, who previously headed the ad hoc committee, has now become the youngest BCB president.
This election was conducted under an interim committee as per the Bangladesh government’s instructions after the previously elected body, led by Animul Islam, was dissolved due to one of its members being involved in corruption.
Having played 70 tests and 243 ODIs in his 15-year cricket career, Tamim has now set his focus on BCB’s structural changes.
On Sunday (June 07, 2026), the 21st president in the BCB history acknowledged the challenges faced in Bangladesh cricket and promised a strengthened clarity and responsibility in board operations.
Tamim Iqbal Sets Vision to Reshape BCB
During the recent media interaction on Cricbuzz, Tamim Iqbal said he requires some time to make effective changes in BCB’s structure:
“See! There are plenty of things and loopholes that need to be fixed. If we all reach a consensus on the constitutional reform, we can discuss it in the next Annual General Meeting (AGM). This is not a board of just 12 or 13 members where the decision rests on one individual.
There are 1972 councillors we need to deal with, and they should agree. If any constitutional changes are required, we will certainly discuss with them and consider their opinions for the improvement of Bangladesh cricket,” Iqbal said.
Overcoming Challenges and Guaranteed Transparency
BCB was in a hot soup of controversies this year when they refused to play the T20 World Cup 2026 hosted by India. Following Mustafizur Rahman’s exclusion from the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, Tamim Iqbal was among those Bangladeshis who urged a protest against India over this issue.
After becoming the BCB president, Tamim ensured that from his side and the entire board would be cautious not to do anything controversial.
“Yeah! I am new to this role, and I need some time to get involved with these people. More than half of them are new to me, and I met them for the first time.
All I request from you is to give us some time, discuss, and find out the areas of improvement required.
We hope to ensure transparency, and I am keen that I don’t want my board members to get involved in any of the activities that are highly controversial. On behalf of the entire board, we try to act with utmost honesty and dedication,” Iqbal added.
‘I Will Share My Plans’: Tamim Iqbal
Furthermore, Tamim Iqbal promised to share his plans publicly on a timely basis and looked forward to fixing BCB’s past mistakes:
“Yes! As I said a couple of minutes ago, as humans, we make mistakes, and we are bound to commit errors. But how instantly you can rectify those errors is what I am looking forward to. I will share my plans in detail with you in a step-by-step manner from time to time.
When I was in the ad-hoc committee, I had already commenced some work, and I hope we can complete those faster,” the former Bangladeshi batsman stated.
Tamim Opens up About Bangladesh Cricket’s Toughest Phase
During the press conference, Tamim spoke about the challenging phases for Bangladesh and shared his views on how to repair the reputational damage:
“No! I won’t blame anyone or point fingers at anybody. I accept that what happened over the past one and a half years was wrong. But we need everyone’s support to come out of this situation, and this is impossible to do for an individual alone.
Most importantly, we should correct the reputational damage. The mistakes should be discussed, and you have the right to criticise us. I believe that constructive criticism helps to improve the work.
After eight years, this is the opportunity I have to speak with you regularly. So, I ensure to keep you updated about my plans,” Tamim explained.

Overall Opinion
The BCB election at the Sher-e Bangla National Stadium saw Tamim Iqbal securing 73 out of 75 councillor votes. In the Category 2 election for Dhaka-based clubs, he concluded far ahead of the other 16 contenders who competed for the 12 director positions.
Fahim Sana became the BCB vice-president after garnering 66 votes during the first board meeting. With this, the election finalized the establishment of a 25-member board to operate Bangladesh cricket for the next four years.
BCB went through a rough period followed by concerns over governance and internal dissatisfaction among the members. In recent times, several directors resigned from their roles, highlighting the unrest within the board. Several report sources claim that a massive controversy during the T20 World Cup 2026 led to a sudden leadership change.
