T20 World Cup 2024: Predicted Best Playing XI of Team India

With less than a week remaining for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 to commence, the expectation reaches an unimaginable level. As we reach the concluding stages of an entertaining IPL 2024 season, the Twenty20 fever continues to spread internationally, and the competitive teams will start the quest to clinch the most prestigious T20 World Cup trophy.

Especially, Team India is on a mission to end their 10-year drought of winning an ICC Trophy by including their best playing XI for all matches. It was in 2013 when the men-in-blue last won the ICC Champions Trophy led by MS Dhoni.

The selectors have assembled a strong set of 15-member squad for the grand event. However, several confusions arise about which talented cricketers should be included in the playing XI for the T20 World Cup 2024.

Especially, there is a tough competition among these two wicketkeepers namely Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson to seal their position in the eleven-member squad.

Despite Hardik Pandya’s poor form in IPL 2024, he managed to secure a spot in the playing eleven as the vice-captain.

Whereas, players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah solidify their position as core players in the selected eleven.

In this article, we will predict the list of best-playing XI for Team India in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, based on their performance in T20 internationals.

Team India’s Best Playing XI Prediction: ICC T20 World Cup 2024

Here is how Team India can build a strong playing XI to perform well against the challenging teams in IPL 2024:

1. Rohit Sharma (Captain):

Indian skipper and opening batter Rohit Sharma has amassed 3,974 in 151 T20I matches. Currently, he ranks as the second-highest leading scorer in T20 internationals.

In IPL 2024, the Hitman scored 417 runs in 14 matches with a century and half-century. He is capable of accelerating his team’s score and displaying an aggressive performance in the powerplay overs. Additionally, as a captain, his tactical decision-making skills will be essential to guide his team in high-pressure situation matches.

2. Yashasvi Jaiswal:

In 17 T20I matches, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 502 runs. Whereas, in IPL 2024 he scored 393 runs in 14 innings for his team Rajasthan Royals. The 22-year-old left-handed batter provides a perfect opening combination along with Rohit.

3. Virat Kohli:

Virat Kohli is the leading run scorer in the T20 international format, scoring 4037 runs in 117 matches. Currently, he is the orange cap holder in IPL 2024 by achieving 741 runs in just 15 innings. Also, Kohli was the player of the tournament in three World Cups (T20Is-2 and ODIs-1).

A mix of anchoring the innings and playing destructive knocks makes Kohli the perfect choice to bat at the No.3 position.

4. Rishabh Pant (Wicketkeeper):

Despite Rishabh Pant scoring fewer runs than Sanju Samson in IPL 2024, he still gets a higher priority in the playing XI. This is because Pant has the proven ability to bat in the middle order; whereas Samson batted in the first three positions in IPL 2024.

In 14 matches of IPL 2024, Pant scored 446 runs in 13 innings and 987 runs in 66 matches of his T20I career.

5. Hardik Pandya (vice-captain):

Despite a horrible IPL season, Hardik’s all-round abilities as a medium pacer and right-handed batter in the middle order can bring perfect balance to the squad. Also, with his power-hitting skills, he can prove to be the best finisher for his team.

6. Suryakumar Yadav:

The fearless batting style of Suryakumar Yadav makes him achieve an impressive record of 2141 runs in 57 T20I innings, which includes 7 fifties and 4 hundreds. His ability to execute unorthodox shots makes him a valuable player in the middle order.

7. Ravindra Jadeja:

Although the T20I statistics of 480 runs and 53 runs in 66 matches seem to be average, Ravindra Jadeja’s talent as a spin bowler and lower-order batsman adds a new dimension to the squad. His ability to run swiftly between the wickets helps to grab runs instantly. Additionally, his fielding skills can save essential runs and execute effective run-outs.

8. Kuldeep Yadav:

As a key spin bowler, Kuldeep Yadav’s consistent performance makes him a more appealing choice over other spinners. His variations are valuable in the middle overs and confuse any in-form batters. In 35 T20I matches, Kuldeep took 59 wickets at an average of 11.5.

9. Yuzvendra Chahal:

Yuzvendra Chahal, after a long gap, has the potential to make a comeback into T20Is with his brilliant performance in IPL 2024 (18 wickets in 14 matches). The 33-year-old leg spinner took 96 wickets in 80 T20I matches.

10. Jasprit Bumrah:

As a core pacer of the Indian cricket team, Jasprit Bumrah’s presence will be crucial for his team in the T20 World Cup. In 62 T20I games, Bumrah took 74 wickets at an average of 19.66 and 6.56 economy.

11. Mohammed Siraj:

Mohammed Siraj’s latest form (15 wickets in 14 IPL matches) and his experience make him a suitable replacement for injured Shami to strengthen the pace bowling attack. In 10 T20I matches, Siraj took 12 wickets, and his talent to swing with the new ball allows him to deliver strong cutters; thereby adding a huge depth to the bowling line-up.

Possible Replacements in Team India’s Playing XI for T20 World Cup 2024

Most probably, these four players might get a chance to be a part of the Indian cricket team playing XI in a few matches of the T20 World Cup 2024:

1. Sanju Samson in place of Rishabh Pant:

Although Sanju Samson has played few T20I games compared to Rishabh Pant, he delivered an exceptional performance by scoring 521 runs in 14 innings of the ongoing season. Whereas, in T20Is, Samson scored 374 runs in 25 T20 international matches. His ability to guide fielders behind the stumps makes him the best alternate to Pant.

2. Shivam Dube in place of Suryakumar Yadav:

Shivam Dube’s power-hitting abilities are proven only against spin bowling and can’t anchor the innings on slow pitches. In 14 T20I matches, Dube scored 276 runs, which includes his highest score of 63 runs. However, he could replace Suryakumar Yadav in a few matches, if Team India requires an additional fast-bowling all-rounder.

3. Arshdeep Singh in place of Mohammed Siraj:

There are fewer chances of Arshdeep Singh taking over the highly skilled pacer Mohammed Siraj’s position in the playing XI. Although Arshadeep took more wickets than Siraj (62 wickets in 44 T20I matches),  he hasn’t been in his best form to produce variations.

4. Axar Patel in place of Yuzvendra Chahal:

As a spin-bowling all-rounder, Axar Patel has a higher chance of replacing Yuzvendra Chahal in the playing XI. This is because Axar’s destructive batting style can prove to be essential in the lower middle-order batting line-up and can accumulate huge runs in the death overs.

Earlier, Rohit Sharma said in an interview that there is a specific reason why selectors include a majority of spinners in the squad; which he wouldn’t reveal now and rather would give additional details once the tournament starts.

It is expected that spin bowlers would be given maximum preference in the playing XI rather than pacers, depending upon the pitch conditions in the West Indies and the USA.

Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, Team India won 10 games sequentially before facing a heart-breaking loss to Australia in the 2023 World Cup finals. As a result, Rohit Sharma and his men aim to triumph in the T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on a high note.

Overall, Team India’s batting line-up looks dominant when compared to their bowling department. It remains to be seen how Rohit Sharma’s led side will bring a perfect balance in terms of batting and bowling performances.
