SWOT Analysis Of Mumbai Indians IPL 2025 Squads All You Need To Know!

Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction, Mumbai Indians (MI) retained their five core players for INR 75 crores. It includes the names of Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma.

Having spent more than 60% of funds out of INR 120 crore purse to retain only five capped Indian players, there were uncertainties on how the five-time IPL champions would fill up remaining slots by including top-quality middle-order batters and all-rounders.

With INR 45 crore, the franchise has made strategic moves in the two-day bidding event by acquiring key players. This helped them solve the drawbacks in their batting and bowling line-up.

However, the franchise with 1 Right to Match (RTM) card to retain an uncapped player was left with no possibility of retaining the capped Indian cricketer Ishan Kishan via RTM due to the IPL 2025 retention policies.

It’s time for MI to recover from the disastrous season of IPL 2024 as the present squad is blended with a mix of international experienced and young domestic talents. But, the main question remains if the franchise has focused on strengthening the spin bowling unit, which has been a main weakness for the past few seasons.

Let’s delve deeper into the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis of MI’s latest squad after the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Strengths:

  • Powerful Batting line-up: The inclusion of England’s batting all-rounder Will Jacks can help build solid opening partnerships along with the IPL’s third-highest run-scorer Rohit Sharma. Especially during the powerplay overs, these duo batters can provide explosive starts to their team.

In addition, the batting line-up features several power hitters such as Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, and Naman Dhir. Moreover, New Zealand’s all-rounder Mitchell Santner can accelerate the team’s innings batting down the order.
  • A Talented Overseas Wicketkeeper: Acquiring the South African wicketkeeper-batter  Ryan Rickelton for his base price of INR 1 crore adds the valuable experience of an overseas cricketer to the squad. Moreover, the 28-year-old can fulfill Ishan Kishan’s absence in terms of left-handed batting and wicketkeeping.
  • Strengthened Pace Bowling Unit: Acquiring New Zealand’s top pace bowler Trent Boult for INR 12.50 crore and the swing specialist Deepak Chahar for INR 9.25 crore can bolster the pace bowling attack along with Jasprit Bumrah. These three pacers can together contribute several match-winning performances for their team in the forthcoming 18th season.

In addition, Hardik Pandya’s pace bowling technique is an added advantage based on his performance in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Weaknesses:

  • Limited Spin Bowling options: Once again, MI has failed to strengthen the spin bowling unit. Apart from Allah Ghazanfar and Karn Sharma, the franchise hasn’t acquired any full-time spinners. Possibly, the spin bowling all-rounders such as Will Jacks and Mitchell Santner need to step up to strengthen the spin bowling line-up.
  • Key Players to find themselves under pressure: At times, too much dependence can pressure the experienced core players including Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah.
  • Injury Concerns with pacers: In the past few editions, the MI pacers have been prone to frequent injuries that have kept them out of action for a few matches.

Opportunities:

  • Domestic Players to become future of MI: Attracting talented domestic cricketers such as the wicketkeeper-batter Robin Minz for INR 65 lakh and leg-spinner Karn Sharma for INR 50 lakh is an affordable investment for MI. These two Indian players can be groomed to become the future stars of the team.
  • Only captain to win IPL trophies for 2 different teams: The Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya has an interesting opportunity to become a successful leader by becoming the only captain in IPL history to lead 2 different teams to the championship title. Earlier, the Gujarat Titans (GT) won an IPL trophy in its inaugural season in 2022 under Hardik’s captaincy.

Despite the team concluding at the bottom position in the previous season, the 31-year-old Indian all-rounder still gets another chance to prove his leadership skills.

  • Suryakumar Yadav as the next MI captain: As Hardik Pandya is expected to miss MI’s first match in IPL 2025 due to a slow over-rate ban in the previous season, India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav could lead the team in his absence. It could be a valuable opportunity for India’s 360-degree batsman to replicate his success rate as T20I captain. This helps to prove his leadership skills and increases his chances of becoming the next skipper after Hardik in the subsequent editions.

Threats:

  • Not Acquiring Piyush Chawla through RTM: Mumbai Indians haven’t retained the uncapped Indian player Piyush Chawla through RTM, who was the only top spin bowler for his team in the past few seasons. Although the 35-year-old hasn’t officially retired from international cricket, it has been more than five years since he represented the Indian national team. Releasing the leg-spinner from the squad could add a huge threat to MI’s inexperienced spin-bowling line-up.
  • High Competition from other teams batters: Despite Mumbai Indians adding strength to the fast bowling line-up, they might face severe competition from other teams having a strong batting unit. It includes teams such as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) that have acquired top-quality batters in the mega auction, which might pose a huge threat to MI bowlers having fewer spin bowling options.
