Indian Batsman Suryakumar Yadav undergoes surgery on his groin in Munich, Germany on 17th January 2024. Indeed, it was the second surgery he underwent in recent months. Especially, after he suffered an ankle injury during the India Tour of South Africa in December 2023.

The world’s best T20I batter was the stand-in captain for the 3-match T20I series against South Africa, in the absence of Rohit Sharma. He twisted his ankle during the last T20I match of the series.

After making a 56-ball century, fans observed Suryakumar Yadav walking with a moon boot after that match. It was an early indication that the injury was serious.

According to the verified reports, SKY underwent an operation on the injured ankle too. Additionally, he had gone through rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore, before travelling to Germany for advanced treatment.

Coincidentally, it is a similar condition that KL Rahul experienced. He too underwent a sports hernia operation in Germany in June 2022.

Suryakumar was along with his wife Devisha in Germany to undergo a crucial operation.

Recently, he wasn’t available for the selection of the 3-match T20I series against Afghanistan.

As a result, the selectors appointed Rohit Sharma as the T20I captain. He successfully led India to a clean win of 3-0. Furthermore, Rohit Sharma as a captain and batsman created a sensation in the final match of the series. Moreover, it was the last assignment of the T20I series for team India ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024.

How severe was Suryakumar Yadav’s injury?

Suryakumar Yadav twisted his ankle while fielding in the third and last T20I match of the series against the Proteas on 14th December 2023.

The right-handed batsman after scoring his 4th T20I century at New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg during the first innings, was not able to continue on the field for a longer time.

During the 2nd innings of South Africa’s batting, Suryakumar Yadav faced a severe injury when he attempted to throw the ball. Particularly, in the 3rd over he tried to stop the shot hit by the Proteas batsman Reeza Hendricks.

After twisting his ankle, the physios carried him out of the field. Later, Ravindra Jadeja was the stand-in captain for the remaining match.

At the post-match presentation ceremony, Suryakumar Yadav said that he was fine and he could walk slowly. At that time, he felt that the injury wasn’t severe.

When Suryakumar Yadav returned to India after the completion of the T20I series, the medical experts scanned his ankle. The reports indicated that Grade-2 level tear, which includes the symptoms of moderate to extreme pains. Typically, the grade-2 level sprain with severe swelling takes 4 to 6 weeks to heal.  

Afterward, it was proved that Suryakumar Yadav would not be able to return to the field for a longer time than expected. Thereby, this was the main reason why Suryakumar Yadav wasn’t a part of the Afghanistan Tour of India 2024.

The medical team within the BCCI suggested that Suryakumar could become completely fit for the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2024. Mostly, Suryakumar Yadav should start playing in the 17th edition of the tournament which starts in the last week of March 2024.

It becomes clear that Suryakumar Yadav could be completely fit before the commencement of ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

The NCA has taken the initiative to ensure that Surya becomes fully prepared before the T20 World Cup in June 2024.

Earlier, Indian players like Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul returned to the 2023 ODI World Cup by undergoing rehab at the NCA to gain fitness after facing a severe injury.
