India’s star batsman Suryakumar Yadav, who was sacked from the T20I captaincy role and sidelined from the squad, shared a heart-touching support for his team.
Shreyas Iyer replaced the T20 World Cup 2026 winning captain and will lead his team during the Ireland-England tour and the Asian Games this September.
Despite exhibiting brilliance in captaincy, Suryakumar was snubbed from the squad due to his underwhelming batting performance in the T20 World Cup and IPL.
Suryakumar’s first social media post after being sacked from the captaincy continues to become viral. Also, he congratulated the teenager, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s maiden call-up for India.
A Heart-Touching Instagram Story for Team India
Soon after the official announcement, Suryakumar Yadav took to his Instagram account. He shared a story showcasing the BCCI official squad announcement for the forthcoming limited-overs tours of Ireland and England.
“Congrats! Wishing this highly skilled team great success. All the best for the forthcoming challenges,” SKY wrote on his Instagram story.
‘Very Happy Iyer Became Captain’: Suryakumar Yadav
During the toss of the Mumbai T20 League match between the Triumphs Knights MNE and SoBo Mumbai Falcons, Suryakumar Yadav expressed his happiness for Shreyas Iyer becoming India’s new T20I skipper.
“Yeah! Feels happy for Shreyas Iyer’s achievement. We played a lot of international cricket and for Mumbai together. Mainly, three back-to-back captains for Team India from Mumbai is indeed a proud moment for Mumbai cricket. This is one such rare achievement that we all need to celebrate,” the Triumphs Knights MNE captain said.
A Separate Post to Congratulate Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Furthermore, Suryakumar added another post in his Instagram story and conveyed his heartfelt congratulations to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on getting selected for the Ireland-England tour as well as the Asian Games 2026.
“Congratulations! You have finally earned it, and how. Absolutely excited to follow your journey in Indian cricket,” the former captain wrote.
Poor Batting Form: A Worrying Concern for Brilliant Captain Suryakumar Yadav
Despite leading India to T20 World Cup 2026 glory and maintaining an unbeaten streak in bilateral series, Suryakumar Yadav’s batting form turned out to be a threat to securing his spot in the team.
There is no doubt about his strong captaincy records. Team India won 42 out of 50 matches under his captaincy, including a thrilling super over contest against Sri Lanka in July 2024. With 84% success rate as a captain, the 35-year-old won 8 out of 9 bilateral series (including 1 draw series vs South Africa), 1 Asia Cup, and 1 T20 World Cup for his team.
In the T20 WC 2026, he scored only 242 runs in 9 innings, including a solo half-century against the USA. His IPL 2026 campaign was even more disastrous, having accumulated only 270 runs in 13 innings, averaging at 20.76.
Considering SKY’s T20I form in 2025, he scored only 218 runs in 19 innings. His failure to deliver impactful performances in the first two games for Triumphs Knights MNE in the T20 Mumbai League 2026 prompted selectors to sack his captaincy and sideline him from India’s squad.
Selectors Long-Term Strategy and Future Plans
It is reported that the Indian cricket team selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, planned for a long-term strategy.
With cricket’s comeback into the Olympics and the T20 World Cup 2028, planning for major events has already commenced in advance.
While Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy skills were pivotal for India’s success in the past couple of years, his recent batting form forced selectors to reconsider the best alternatives.
SKY, who was once feared as one of the most destructive T20 batters, has failed to maintain consistency for the past 18 months.
Especially, the competition from young talents like the 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made him earn a spot in India’s squad to compete at the highest level.
Most importantly, Shreyas Iyer exhibited a masterclass performance by leading the Punjab Kings batting line-up from the front in the past two IPL seasons (2025 and 2026). His match-winning performances grabbed selectors’ attention over Suryakumar, signalling that he is the perfect leader for India’s upcoming generation of fearless T20 cricketers.

Final Opinion About Suryakumar Yadav’s Classy Response
Suryakumar Yadav showed no signs of controversy despite the selectors priortizing Shreyas Iyer’s recent form and IPL captaincy over the T20 World Cup-winning skipper.
Rather, the former captain showed great maturity by conveying his wishes to the T20I squad for the upcoming England and Ireland tours led by a new captain. His classy response highlighted the true sportsmanship and support towards his long-time teammate.
While there is no official confirmation, it is understood SKY played his last game for India as a captain and player in the T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand. The right-handed batter expressed his desire to feature in the 2028 Olympics. But, with this ruthless snub from the squad, it is unlikely that SKY could get his dream fulfilled before opting for a retirement from his remarkable cricket career.
