Team India’s rising talented batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has made one of the biggest shocking decisions as he decided to quit his state team, Mumbai, and represent Goa from the 2025-26 season onwards. The 23-year-old’s request has been accepted by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to grant him a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for a smooth transition.
Over the years, several players have made a shift from Mumbai to other teams due to inadequate opportunities. But Jaiswal, possessing such exceptional talent, could have led the top teams of domestic cricket. The left-handed batter revealed that the leadership role for the Goa team prompted him to make a move.
Yashasvi’s Reasons for his move from Mumbai to Goa
One of the main reasons Yashasvi Jaiswal cited is the new opportunities and captaincy role at Goa, which was his motivation to leave Mumbai:
“Yes! Goa Cricket Association (GCA) has granted me a new opportunity, offered with a captaincy role. My main goal will be to perform well for India. And I will be representing Goa when I’m away from the national duties, so that I can ensure the team’s progress in the tournament.
This is one such opportunity that stood in front of me, and I had to just grab it. But, it was one of the most difficult decisions for me, because whatever I am experiencing today is because of the Mumbai team. This city has played a crucial role in my growth, and throughout my life, I would be grateful to the MCA,” Jaiswal said.
Is it just captaincy that motivated Yashasvi Jaiswal to switch to Goa? Reasons to Leave Mumbai
Several reports claim that the relationship between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane has been worse for the past few years. Sources reveal that the left-handed batter was unsatisfied with the Mumbai cricket management and the continued criticisms.
Rahane vs Jaiswal: The starting point of conflict
The misunderstanding between these two started in the Duleep Trophy 2022 final match, when the West Zone captain Rahane sent Yashasvi Jaiswal off the field for disciplinary reasons as he sledged the South Zone batter Ravi Teja.
Even after repeated warnings from the captain and umpire, the young lad was unstoppable with his actions. As Rahane felt that his young teammate was crossing his limits, he ordered him to stay out of the field. This was the beginning of the problematic relationship between these two Indian batters.
Jaiswal’s Shot Selection Critiqued
Another reason is that Yashasvi’s shot selections were often questioned for the past two seasons, playing for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). The southpaw felt that he was purposefully targeted by the team management, regardless of the criticism being true or false.
Mumbai vs Jammu and Kashmir Group A Ranji Trophy 2025 Match
The final blow was during the highly anticipated match between Mumbai and Jammu and Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy Elite 2024-25 season, where Yashasvi, along with the Indian captain Rohit Sharma, opened up the innings for the side. In contrast to the expectations, the duo opening batters of the Indian cricket team ended up with single-digit scores. Finally, J&K pulled off a remarkable victory over Mumbai, and Jaiswal was criticized by the team management for his poor outing in the match.
Rahane’s Kitbag Incident
Furthermore, the sources closer to India Today revealed that the young batter even kicked the captain Rahane’s bag in anger after the match. The young opener felt that he was indirectly targeted by the coach Omkar Salvi, and skipper for Mumbai’s loss in the group stage, and was questioned on his dedication towards the sport.
Jaiswal scored just 4 and 26 runs in both innings of that match as Mumbai’s total was bundled out for 120 and 290, causing a severe 5-wicket loss.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Mumbai Teammate Adds New Twist to the Tale
Mumbai’s veteran batter Siddhesh Lad, who was Jaiswal’s teammate, dismissed the speculations to clarify that the young batter’s decision to leave the team was not due to any issues or disagreements with the team management.
“See! He played just a single game in the entire season, and there wasn’t a lot to happen in that match. The reason would have been appropriate if he had participated in the whole season, and he was disappointed about something.
I’m not sure what happened as I didn’t communicate with him. But he could have got the leadership role here itself by playing the complete season.
I feel he should have cleared it out if there was any disappointment. As there weren’t any issues with the coaches or team players, the problem could have been sorted out easily if there had been any. Being a test player, he is treated with respect in the dressing room, and the other players also expect the same from him. He is one such talented player for India, and I believe that he could hardly play a few matches in domestic cricket for the next five years,” Lad said.
As Siddhesh isn’t sure of what exactly happened, the speculation related to Jaiswal’s exit from Mumbai tends to multiply even deeper in the upcoming days.
