Reasons For The Weak Performance Of RCB In IPL 2024

A Detailed Analysis of the reasons for the weak performance of RCB in IPL 2024

The Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has shown one of the weakest performances in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season by winning just 1 out of 4 games.

Although it’s a new season, the same old worries continue for the RCB as both the batting and bowling departments of RCB have underperformed this season due to a lack of consistency. It resulted in facing a severe loss against these teams:

  • 6-wicket loss against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk Stadium
  • 7- wicket loss against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru
  • 28-run loss against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru

Currently, RCB ranks at the 8th position and further losses would jeopardize their rankings in the IPL 2024 points table.

Scrutinizing these reasons helps you to understand why the chances of RCB qualifying for the IPL 2024 playoffs remain at risk and how their performance failed in the ongoing season.

No Consistent Indian Batter, Except Virat Kohli:

For many years, RCB has been facing the biggest problem of not having a consistent Indian batter in the team apart from Virat Kohli. Even the former Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid was the 2nd best Indian batter for RCB in terms of runs.

Despite the run machine Kohli being the orange cap holder and scoring maximum runs, it wouldn’t be appropriate for the entire team to depend on him always.

Though KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal showed some consistency for RCB in the earlier seasons, the franchise didn’t have any trust in them and released them in the subsequent editions.  Currently, Rajat Patidar and Anuj Rawat’s performance as middle order fails to leave the best impression on their team.

Too Much Dependence Over KGF:

The batting department of the RCB is completely reliant upon its KGF— the trio combination of Kohil-Glenn-Faf. If these three top batters fail, you cannot expect the RCB batters to post a high total against their opponents. You might have observed, that the RCB’s middle order easily succumbed to the opposition team’s bowling attack

Despite Dinesh Karthik being selected as RCB’s best finisher, he also failed to perform his role in the last two games against KKR and LSG.

RCB continues to collapse in run chases at home ground:

RCB hasn’t managed to win a single game since 2016 at their home ground while chasing a target of 180-plus. Mainly, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium at Bengaluru is a landmark to experience thrilling chases and high-scoring encounters.

Whereas, the other teams like Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians rarely lose games at home, which is one of the major reasons for the success of this T20 league over these years.

Mainly, RCB’s ability to win only 1 out of 3 games on its home ground in the ongoing IPL 2024 season indicates a lack of planning and improper strategy execution by the entire team.

Top Overseas Batters to Find Their Momentum:

The other top overseas batters such as Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green have to find their momentum. Here are the scores of these three batters in their first four matches of IPL 2024:

  • Faf du Plessis:
    • 35 runs from 23 balls (including 8 fours)  vs CSK
    • 3 runs from 7 balls vs PBKS
    • 8 runs from 6 balls vs KKR
    • 19 runs from 13 balls (including 3 fours) vs LSG
  • Glenn Maxwell:
    • 0 from 1 ball vs CSK
    • 3 runs from 5 balls vs PBKS
    • 28 runs from 19 balls (including 3 fours and 1 six) vs KKR
    • 0 from 2 balls vs LSG
  • Cameron Green:
    • 18 runs from 22 balls (including 1 four) vs CSK
    • 3 runs from 5 balls vs PBKS
    • 33 runs from 21 balls (including 4 fours and 2 sixes) vs KKR
    • 9 runs from 9 balls (including 1 four) vs LSG

RCB’s close survival against the PBKS in IPL 2024:

A special cameo from Dinesh Karthik and Mahipal Lomror helped RCB survive closely from facing another humiliating defeat against PBKS in their 2nd match of IPL 2024.

Earlier, in the 2nd innings, Virat Kohli’s rescuing knock of 77 runs from 49 balls (including 11 fours and 2 sixes) single-handedly revived his team’s collapsing batting order until the 16th over.

However, Kohli’s dismissal threatened RCB to secure their first win of the tournament. But, Dinesh Karthik’s 28 runs from 10 balls( including 3 fours and 2 sixes) and Mahipal Lomror’s 17 runs from 8 balls (including 2 fours and 1 six) helped RCB chase the target of 177 runs with a  4-wicket win.

Constant Changes in Playing XI:

The frequent changes in the playing XI have been a continuing concern for RCB over these years. Most importantly, the team management has sidelined the players after just one or two poor performances. At times, even the best-performing players haven’t been given special preference.

For instance, the fast bowler Vijaykumar Vyshakh was omitted from the playing XI against LSG, despite his impressive performance.

Also, RCB hasn’t included Will Jacks in the batting lineup who can amplify the team’s score with his power-hitting abilities.

Poor Bowling Performance:

The weak bowling performance resulted in RCB failing to defend its targets against CSK and KKR in IPL 2024. Except for the Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, none of the full-time bowlers have made an impressive performance for RCB so far. Though the Australian all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green can contribute with a decent performance with the ball, it wouldn’t be sufficient to strengthen the bowling attack.
