Ravichandran Ashwin Took 450 Wickets in Test Cricket! Becomes The Fastest Indian to Surpass Anil Kumble’s Record?

Earlier, Ravichandran Ashwin took 450 wickets in test cricket during the 1st test match between Team India and Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on 9th February 2023. As a result, Ashwin breaks Anil Kumble’s record by becoming the fastest Indian to achieve the exceptional feat. The Indian veteran spinner added another fantastic record to his tets career at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur.

Anil Kumble achieved his 450th test wicket in 93 matches, on 8th March 2005 against Pakistan. In contrast, Ashwin took 450 wickets in just 89 test matches.

Also, he became the 2nd fastest international spin bowler after Muttiah Muralitharan, who grabbed his 450th wicket in 80 matches. 

Recently, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja became the successful Indian bowling pair in test cricket by taking 504 wickets together in 50 tests.

In this aspect, the duo combination surpasses the previous record of 501 wickets in 54 tests held by the duo spinners- Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble.

Currently, Ravichandran Ashwin achieved his 493rd wicket in the ongoing 1st test match against England on 25th January 2024.

On Day 1 he concluded with his bowling figures of 3-68 in 21 overs. He proved to be a game-changer on a spin-friendly track at Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad. It resulted in the best England batsmen falling prey to Ashwin’s spin bowling attack such as:

  1. Ben Duckett ( 35 runs from 39 balls- including 7 fours): At 55-1 in 11.5 overs
  2. Zak Crawley ( 20 runs from 40 balls- including 3 fours): At 60-3 in 15.1 overs.
  3. Mark Wood ( 11 runs from 24 balls- including 2 fours): At 234-9 in 61.3 overs.

The above performance reminds how Ashwin took 450 wickets in test cricket by adding another milestone to his career against Australia in 2023.

During his 89th test match against Australia, Ravichandran Ashwin took 450 wickets when Alex Carey was clean bowled in the 54th over. He fell into the trap of Ashwin’s bowling while attempting to play a reverse sweep.

Also, Ashwin became the fastest Indian to reach the milestones of 50 to 450 wickets in his test cricket career.

Furthermore, Ravichandran Ashwin is the only Asian cricketer to have scored 3,193 runs and 493 wickets in the red ball cricket.

At present, Ashwin is the 2nd highest Indian wicket-taker in test cricket. Anil Kumble tops the list with 619 wickets in 132 matches. He needs 127 wickets to create another sensation to become the leading wicket-taker in red ball cricket.

Additionally, Ashwin became the 9th highest wicket-taker in test cricket globally.

Apart from test format, Ravichandran Ashwin took 156 wickets in 116 ODIs and 72 wickets in 65 T20Is.

Consequently, Australia were bowled out for 177-10 in 63.5 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin took 3 wickets by conceding 42 runs in 15.5 overs. It includes the crucial wickets of the Australian batsmen namely:

  1. Alex Carey( 36 runs from 33 balls- including 7 fours): At 162-6 in 53.1 overs.
  2. Pat Cummins ( 6 runs from 14 balls- including 1 four): At 172-7 in 57.3 overs.
  3. Scott Boland ( 1 run from 8 balls): At 177-10 in 63.5 overs.

Initially, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami took the wickets of the Australian openers. As the ball softened up, the pitch at Nagpur favored spinners to grab wickets instantly.

Once again, the successful combination of Ravichandran Ashwin ( 3- 42 in 15.5 overs) and Ravindra Jadeja ( 5-47 in 22 overs) together grabbed 8 wickets.

Ravichandran Ashwin closer to take 500 Test wickets

Ravichandran Ashwin still requires 7 wickets in the continuing test match to reach his 500th test wicket. Furthermore, he can reach these important milestones by taking 500 test wickets in the England Tour of India 2024 ( India vs England ):

  • 2nd Indian spinner after Anil Kumble
  • 3rd International spin bowler after Muttiah Muralitharan and Nathan Lyon
  • He can tally Anil Kumble’s record of most 5-wicket hauls for India in test cricket (35 times).
  • Possibility to surpass Shane Warne’s (37 times) 5-wicket haul to rank 2nd in the list after Muttiah Muralitharan.
  • Ashwin with 87 wickets can surpass Anil Kumble’s record of most test wickets against England (88 wickets). Also, there are possibilities to surpass BS Chandrashekar’s (95 wickets) records in the proceeding 5-match test series.
  • If Ashwin additionally takes 8 wickets in the series, he could become the highest wicket-taker against England in tests.
  • The first Indian cricketer to complete a century of wickets against England.
