Rashid Khan Unwavering Loyalty to Afghanistan: Citizenship Offer Turned Down!

Afghanistan’s all-rounder stalwart Rashid Khan revealed that he turned down the citizenship offers from both India and Australia as he chose to remain loyal to his nation.

The 27-year-old leg-spinner specialist, who is indeed one of the biggest cricketing stars of his country, disclosed the unknown fact in his upcoming book, “Rashid Khan: From Streets to Stardom”.

It was during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season when an unnamed individual informally requested him to consider a transition to represent another country in international cricket instead of Afghanistan.

From Streets to Stardom: About Rashid Khan’s Story

The forthcoming book “Rashid Khan: From Streets to Stardom” is all set to release on Monday (April 27, 2026). It explains how the Afghan spinner grew up playing cricket in the dusty streets of Nangarhar and reflects on his journey in becoming a star international cricketer.

Also, the book reveals in detail when Rashid was ignored at the Under-19 trial and how he overcame the struggles at the early stages of his cricketing career to achieve global stardom and earn the ICC Player of the Decade honor in 2020.

Rashid Khan About His Citizenship and Playing Offers with Australia and India

Despite the worsening political situation in Afghanistan, Rashid was firm with his stance of not playing cricket for any other nation and maintaining his loyalty to Afghanistan.

See! Earlier, I received offers about citizenship and playing from both Australia and India. But, I clarified to them that if I don’t want to play for my nation, then I won’t play for any other country,” Rashid’s own words from his book were quoted.

Rashid’s Detailed Narration of India’s Offer

Although Rashid Khan citizenship didn’t elaborate much about the Australian approach, he gave a detailed narration about the Indian offer.

During the IPL 2023 season for the Gujarat Titans, the experienced Afghan spinner explained the conversation with a high-ranked official from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) who wanted to meet him. Here is what Rashid had to say about the incident:

“Yeah! I went and greeted him and then had a detailed conversation. He said that the situation in Afghanistan was very bad and asked me to come and stay in India.

I was surprised by what he said and didn’t know how to respond when he promised to provide me with Indian documents, reside here, and play for India. At the end, I smiled and said: ‘Thank you so much for your offer. But, I am playing cricket for my nation, Afghanistan,’ Rashid recalled the conversation.

Rashid Khan’s Loyalty to Afghanistan: A Similar Episode in IPL 2018

Back in the IPL 2018 Qualifier 2, Rashid Khan’s stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) turned out to be a notable one, where he delivered an all-round performance against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

After scoring an unbeaten 34 runs off 10 balls (including 2 fours and 4 sixes) and claiming 3 wickets for 19 runs (3/19 in 4 overs), the social media was flooded with countless posts about his performance.

Especially his impressive performance in a knockout match, prompted fans to urge the Indian government to grant him citizenship.

Several social media users tagged the then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who later clarified that the Ministry of Home Affairs handles the citizenship matters.

However, the social media campaign gained massive attention that forced the then Afghanistan Presidetn Ashraf Ghani to break his silence. He clarified that Rashid will always remain Afghanistan’s national pride and refused to part ways with its premium cricketing talents.

Later, Rashid showed gratitude to Ghani’s support and clarified that he always remains committed to playing for Afghanistan regardless of the offers received to play for other nations.

Opportunity vs Loyalty: Rashid Khan’s Best Approach

Rashid Khan chose to stay loyal to Afghanistan and respectfully declined the offers from top-tier cricketing nations like India and Australia to play for their national team.

By accepting those tempting offers, he could have gained more opportunities, recognition, and high financial security in his cricket career.

However, the young cricketer’s mature decision shows how he prioritized national loyalty over career advantages, choosing to remain the iconic cricketer for Afghanistan rather than preferring a transition for bigger opportunities.

The Nangarhar-born cricketer reaffirmed his belief that there is no chance of indulging in any sort of negotiation when representing Afghanistan at a global stage.

By showing loyalty towards his nation, Rashid cemented his legacy not only as an international cricketing icon but also as a patriotic figure inspiring the current and upcoming generations of cricketers.

Rashid is currently playing for the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026 and will feature in his next match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Friday, April 24, at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium.
