Kohli And Pant named in Just Arrived Delhi Probable List of 84: Ranji Trophy insights you need to know!
According to recent reports, Senior pace bowler Ishant Sharma has stepped out from the red-ball cricket. On the other hand, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant are named in the 84-member Delhi Ranji Trophy probable list.
Earlier it was during 2012 when Virat was last seen playing in the Ranji Trophy for Delhi. Whereas, Rishabh Pant appeared one time in 2019.
Chief Selector about Virat Kohli being named in the Delhi probable list
Recently during a press meeting, Gursharan Singh, the chief selector confirmed that this is a standard procedure. He added saying that this is not the first time Virat Kohli has been named in the probable list because he is already a registered player for Delhi. In addition, he said it would be applicable in the same way for Rishabh Pant too.
As of now, nothing has been confirmed by the players about their schedules. However, it seems to be entirely uncertain regarding Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant’s probable availability for any of Delhi’s Ranji Trophy matches.
Why did Ishant Sharma opt out of Red Ball cricket?
Ishant Sharma has recently announced his decision to opt out of red-ball matches. He did not play in the inaugural season of DPL (Delhi Premier League). However, he has made it clear that he might participate in white-ball tournaments, like the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Tournament and Vijay Hazare Trophy. This tournament is set to be conducted before the IPL mega auctions.
Possible Factors could be Ishant Sharma’s fitness issues. In the past, there were concerns that he might not be able to perform well in the test format. However, his decision seems right from the perspective of many other players, who generally focus on formats that align better with their present physical capabilities.
An Official of DDCA (Delhi & District Cricket Association) had confirmed that “Ishant Sharma clarified his future unavailability in red-ball matches, but might play in the white-ball tournament like Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.”
Virat Kohli’s Previous Ranji match
Virat Kohli, last played Ranji Trophy for Delhi in November 2012 against Uttar Pradesh, and after that, he has not appeared in any. But having his name on the probable list doesn’t guarantee his playing certainty for the team.
During Virat’s previous Ranji match, he scored 14 runs in the first innings and 42 runs in the second innings. And, in both the innings, Bhuvneshwar Kumar had dismissed Virat Kohli.
Rishabh Pant’s Previous Ranji match
On the other hand, Rishabh Pant had last played Ranji Trophy for Delhi in March 2019 against Vidarbha. Although his contributions to the team were valuable, Delhi lost the match and Vidarbha bagged their first-ever Ranji Trophy title.
During Rishabh’s previous Ranji match, he scored 21 runs in the first innings and 32 runs in the second innings.
Why would Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant not play for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy?
Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant will be busy preparing themselves for the upcoming New Zealand Test series scheduled to begin on 16th October 2024. Delhi has confirmed its schedule and plans to launch its campaign against Chhattisgarh on 11th October 2024 in Raipur.
Other than preparations for the New Zealand Test Series, the 2 reasons are:
- Virat Kohli’s 12 years of absence as he has not participated in the Ranji Trophy since 2012, it is uncertain that he will play again.
- Rishabh Pant’s recent accident injuries and his recovery process might not allow his availability for the Ranji Trophy, and he might prioritize getting ready for international matches.
