The Ranji Trophy 2023–24 winners Mumbai are set to play against the Rest of India’s team in the Irani Cup 2024 starting from October 01 to October 05. Within a few days, Mumbai, placed in Elite Group A, will start their campaign against Baroda in the 2024-25 season opener of the Ranji Trophy on October 11.
On Tuesday (September 24), the defending champions Mumbai named 25 probables for the forthcoming edition of the tournament. However, the list doesn’t include the test and ODI skipper Rohit Sharma as well as the T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav. This is because the duo cricketers share their captaincy responsibilities in the upcoming international matches. Moreover, Team India’s busy schedule provides Rohit and Suryakumar the option of making themselves available for participation based on their convenience.
The latest reports reveal that the medium pacer Tushar Deshpande will undergo a left ankle surgery in London on September 30. His return to the cricket field will be confirmed once he commences his rehab. Similarly, the Kolkata Knight Riders’ opening batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who marked his impressive debut in IPL 2024, is certain to miss out on the tournament due to a back fracture.
In contrast to the traditional practice of selecting 30 probables for the Ranji Trophy, the Mumbai selection committee has declared a list of 25 probables in its pursuit of defending its title.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Chief Selector Sanjay Patil in his recent interview gives a valid reason for why the five slots are still open.
Mumbai Chief Selector Sanjay Patil Explains Why Five Slots Are Still Open
Sanjay Patil explains that the selection committee ensures that all the team members including the non-regular players as well are getting ready to take part in the local tournament whenever possible. He explains that the staff is trying their best efforts by providing a chance for players to prove their skills and here is what the Mumbai Chief Selector said:
“Yes! The five probables slots are still open. This helps us to add names to the list of probables as the local season commences. Moreover, the selection committee has solemnly agreed after consultation with the CIC chief Raju Kulkarni, our mentor Milind Rege, and the officers.
He (refers to Tushar and Angkrish) and all the other cricketers who have been injured and haven’t been participating in local tournaments will have to undergo a fitness test. It is something that we have made important from the previous season onwards to prove their match fitness before playing in any of the local tournaments. However, you need to know that this list isn’t finalized. There are chances to add an extra seven players. So, it becomes clear that the players who can prove their fitness levels and deliver exceptional performance in local tournaments will be preferred,” Sanjay Patil said.
