Rahul Dravid Approached By KKR | IPL 2025

IPL 2025: KKR Approached Rahul Dravid as a quick swap for Gautam Gambhir

Former Indian left-handed batter Gautam Gambhir, who became the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2024, guided his team to winning their third IPL trophy. Meanwhile, Rahul Dravid’s tenure as Team India’s head coach concluded after the T20 World Cup 2024 finals on June 29 and received a perfect farewell after the men-in-blue claimed their 2nd T20 World Cup title after 17 years.

Recently, the BCCI secretary Jay Shah made an official announcement on his social media account by welcoming Gautam Gambhir as Team India’s new head coach. This implies that KKR will be searching for a perfect candidate to fill the vacant sport for the 2025 season. In such scenarios, Rahul Dravid is the ideal choice to replace Gautam Gambhir.

Despite facing heartbreaking losses in the previous year’s finals of the World Test Championship (WTC) and ODI World Cup, both against Australia, Dravid and his men made a strong comeback. They together worked as a team to achieve a historical victory in the recently concluded T20 World Cup tournament last month in Barbados. Team India led by Rohit Sharma defeated South Africa by 7 runs in the last-over thriller of the final match.

The latest reports further added the fact that KKR is desperately looking for an effective replacement for Gambhir and wants Dravid as a coach or mentor for the next IPL season. Also, the franchise shows its interest in offering a more lucrative amount than Dravid earned as Team India’s Head Coach, which was INR 12 crores.

Rahul Dravid’s Previous Role as Head Coach and Mentor

Previously, Rahul Dravid worked as a mentor for the Rajasthan Royals franchise between the IPL 2014-15 season and Delhi Daredevils (now known as Delhi Capitals) in 2016. Later, he had to leave the job due to conflicts in his interests. In other words, he was interested in taking up the role of head coach for India A and India U-19

The 51-year-old former right-handed batter, who had a 16-year remarkable career as a player, has been influential in nurturing the young talents from the Under-19 and A teams, which includes the best examples of Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, and Washington Sundar.

He recently worked as the National Cricket Academy’s (NCA) head in 2021 before taking up the role of Indian team head coach.

A Swapping Deal between Gambhir and Dravid

Ahead of the IPL 2024 season, KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan offered Gambhir a 10-year plan with a huge sum of money. At the same time, BCCI’s offer made it difficult for Gautam Gambhir to control his temptation and was ready to accept the prestigious role of the Indian cricket team’s head coach.

However, Gambhir’s comeback to the Indian team as head coach would leave a huge gap for the position of KKR’s mentor since the franchise has hugely benefitted from his leadership skills in becoming the defending champions of IPL 2024. In contrast, the same franchise, without Gambhir’s presence concluded at the 7th position in the points table in the previous two seasons of IPL (in 2022 and 2023).

Also, a national team’s head coach shouldn’t represent any franchises of IPL or vice versa. In such conditions, the swapping deal between Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid seemed promising for KKR.

Earlier, Rahul Dravid mentioned that he had no plans to continue as India’s head coach since he wasn’t ready to spend another 10 months in a year traveling and staying away from his family. However, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is a completely different concept, where Dravid needs to be with the franchise only for 2–3 months in a year of the T20 League.

There are possibilities for a direct swap between these two former Indian cricketers, as Kolkata Knight Riders will be aiming to double its success rate by appointing India’s T20 World Cup-winning coach.

Conclusion

On 29th June 2024 (Saturday), Rahul Dravid stepped down as Team India’s head coach, and his support to the national side on his final day’s work will always be a memorable moment in his life.

In a recent conversation with the reporters at Kensington Oval, one of the journalists asked Rahul Dravid about any current offers, after winning the T20 World Cup 2024. In response, Dravid jokingly said that he would remain unemployed from the next week

However, Dravid might not wait long to grab another job opportunity as various IPL franchises approached the former Indian skipper for the role of head coach or mentor, after his recent success in T20 World Cup.

Finally, it would be interesting to watch if the former Indian head coach takes up the mentor/coach role for KKR or other IPL franchises in the future, or if he plans to spend time with family and friends.
