The ongoing season of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26 has turned out to be the most embarrassing one for Pakistani star cricketers. With just a few weeks away from the T20 World Cup, the star players like Babar Azam and Mohammed Rizwan failed to exhibit their worth in the shortest format. Instead of turning the BBL 15 into a memorable one, the season was filled with full of struggles, trolls, and uneasy moments.
Having secured multiple humiliating records to their name, the duo batters currently rank as the slowest batters of the season, having faced 120+ deliveries.
Babar Azam’s BBL Debut Becomes Massive Failure
Babar Azam’s BBL debut in season 15 has turned out to be disastrous. He managed to compile just 202 runs in 11 innings, averaging at 22.44. Only twice did the right-handed batter score 50+, each time facing more than 40 balls.
Here is a list of Babar’s slow batting approach throughout the BBL 2025-26 so far against these teams:
| Opponent Team | Runs Scored | Balls Faced | 4s and 6s | Strike Rate |
| Perth Scorchers | 2 | 5 | 0 | 40.00 |
| Adelaide Strikers | 9 | 10 | 1 Four | 90.00 |
| Sydney Thunder | 58 | 42 | 5 Fours and 2 Sixes | 138.10 |
| Melbourne Stars | 2 | 7 | 0 | 28.57 |
| Melbourne Renegades | 58 (not out) | 46 | 4 Fours and 1 six | 126.09 |
| Brisbane Heat | 2 | 7 | 0 | 28.57 |
| Melbourne Stars | 14 | 17 | 1 Four | 82.35 |
| Hobart Hurricanes | 9 (not out) | 14 | 1 Four | 64.29 |
| Sydney Thunder | 47 | 39 | 7 Fours | 120.51 |
| Brisbane Heat | 1 | 7 | 0 | 14.29 |
| Perth Scorchers (Qualifier 1) | 0 | 2 | 0 | 0 |
| Overall Runs and Balls Faced | 202 Runs | 196 Balls | 19 Fours and 3 Sixes | 103.36 Strike Rate |
To explain in other words, Babar batted at a strike rate of 103.36 this season and accumulated 202 runs out of 196 deliveries faced. The 31-year old’s numbers point out his inability to accelerate his starts into high-scoring knocks.
Babar Azam’s BBL Struggle Comes Into Focus
Considering the 50+ plus knocks, Babar Azam scored 58 twice, but faced 40+ balls on two occasions, each one against Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Renegades.
Especially, the Sydney Sixers opener’s struggle came into clear observation when he was dismissed on a single-digit score six times, which includes a duck out dismissal in Qualifier 1 against the Perth Scorchers.
Mohammad Rizwan’s Lackluster Performance
While Babar managed to score at least two fifties to his name, Mohammad Rizwan failed to breach the 45-run mark in 9 innings.
Moreover, his sluggish performance has been one of the main reasons for the Melbourne Renegades’ elimination before the playoffs. Here is a string of his poor scores against these teams this season:
| Opponent Team | Runs Scored | Balls Faced | 4s and 6s | Strike Rate |
| Brisbane Heat | 4 | 10 | 0 | 40.00 |
| Hobart Hurricanes | 32 | 26 | 5 Fours | 123.08 |
| Hobart Hurricanes | 16 | 12 | 3 Fours | 133.33 |
| Sydney Sixers | 6 | 10 | 0 | 60.00 |
| Melbourne Stars | 41 | 38 | 4 Fours | 107.89 |
| Perth Scorchers | 21 | 25 | 2 Fours | 84.00 |
| Sydney Thunder | 26 (retired hurt) | 23 | 2 Fours and 1 Six | 113.04 |
| Perth Scorchers | 3 | 4 | 0 | 75.00 |
| Adelaide Strikers | 17 | 14 | 1 Four and 1 Six | 121.43 |
| Overall Runs and Balls Faced | 187 Runs | 182 Balls | 19 Fours and 2 Sixes | 102.74 Strike Rate |
Rizwan’s Most Disappointing Performance of BBL 15
Mohammad Rizwan’s ability to play 20-over cricket was questioned to a great extent following his 38-ball-41 run knock against Melbourne Stars.
Despite Melbourne Renegades’ 4-wicket triumph in a 174-run chase, the Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter’s intent in the shortest format came under scrutiny.
Hadn’t Josh Brown scored a quickfire 84 runs off 48 balls (including 9 fours and 4 sixes), the modest target chase would have been gruelling for Renegades due to Rizwan’s slow batting style.
A Humiliating Act Against Mohammed Rizwan in BBL
Mohammad Rizwan’s recent chase against the Sydney Thunder became even worse. Having batted at No.4, the Melbourne Renegades batter struggled to accelerate his innings in a 190-run chase.
As the match started to slip away, the Renegades made a bold call by urging Rizwan to ‘retire out’ after scoring 26 off 23 balls. Unfortunately, Melbourne still faced a 5-wicket loss.
Notably, Rizwan became the first overseas batter in the history of the BBL to get retired out, that too by forceful means.
