NPL Season 3: Is Heinrich Klaasen Joining David Warner in Nepal?

The Nepal Premier League (NPL) is heading into its third season with one of the biggest names in world cricket joining the competition. Former Australia opener David Warner has officially signed for the Kathmandu Gorkhas, giving Season 3 a major international boost.

At the same time, reports and social media discussions have linked South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen with the Sudurpaschim Royals. However, one significant difference exists between the two cases: whereas the decision by Warner has been made official, that of Klaasen’s alleged shift has yet to be confirmed by the Royals as of September 18, 2026.

David Warner Boosts Kathmandu Gorkhas for Nepal Premier League Season 3

According to the Kathmandu Gorkhas’ video announcement, which they made on September 15 via their social media accounts, Warner’s decision had been confirmed. The Australian player stated that he looked forward to visiting Nepal and enjoying the fervor of its cricket fans. Warner ended his message with the words, “Ayo Gorkhali!”, giving supporters an early glimpse of the excitement surrounding his arrival.

The signing is a major addition for the Gorkhas. Warner has played 112 Tests, 161 ODIs and 110 T20Is for Australia, scoring around 19,000 international runs and 49 centuries across the three formats. His international record includes two ODI World Cup titles, won in 2015 and 2023, the 2021 T20 World Cup and the 2021–23 World Test Championship. He was also named Player of the Tournament during Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup campaign.

His Test career included one of the most memorable innings by an Australian batter, an unbeaten 335 against Pakistan in Adelaide in 2019.

Warner’s Huge T20 Resume

Warner’s value to Kathmandu Gorkhas goes beyond his international record. He has spent years playing franchise cricket around the world, with the Indian Premier League being one of the biggest parts of his T20 career. He won the IPL Orange Cap three times, finishing as the tournament’s leading run-scorer in 2015, 2017 and 2019. He also led Sunrisers Hyderabad to the IPL title in 2016.

The 39-year-old will now bring that experience to Nepal. His arrival also adds another major name to the Kathmandu Gorkhas squad, which already includes Sri Lanka’s Sahan Arachchige and India’s KS Bharat, according to reports on the franchise’s overseas recruitment.

For Nepalese supporters, the opportunity to watch a player with Warner’s international and franchise background at the TU International Cricket Ground adds another level of interest to the upcoming season.

The overseas signings also show how the NPL is attracting greater attention outside Nepal. These players, who have experience playing in major T20 tournaments, can bring both quality in their performances as well as international recognition for the tournament. That could further raise the profile of Nepalese cricket and give young domestic players the chance to share the dressing room with established international stars.

Heinrich Klaasen Rumours Take Over Social Media

While Warner’s deal is official, Heinrich Klaasen’s reported move to the Sudurpaschim Royals needs to be treated differently. The South African wicketkeeper-batter has been linked with the Royals in recent speculation, but no official confirmation of his signing by the Sudurpaschim Royals has been found as of September 18, 2026.

Klaasen remains one of the most destructive middle-order batters in franchise cricket. His recent numbers underline his ability in the shortest formats. He scored 624 runs in IPL 2026 at a strike rate of 160, while he also made 177 runs at a strike rate of 177 in The Hundred 2026.

He has also been active in the European T20 Premier League in September, making 85 not out on September 17. If the Sudurpaschim Royals were eventually to confirm a deal, his power against spin and ability to change a T20 match quickly would add considerable experience to their batting group. But for now, that remains a possibility rather than a completed signing.

Nepal Premier League Season 3 Dates and Format

The third edition of the NPL is scheduled to take place from October 26 to November 21, 2026. The confirmed tournament window has been announced, with eight teams set to compete.

The competition is expected to follow a single round-robin league stage, with the top four teams moving into the playoff stage. The tournament will be centred at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. With Warner already confirmed and Klaasen still surrounded by speculation, the build-up to Nepal Premier League Season 3 has already given fans plenty to talk about. One thing is certain: Warner will be heading to Kathmandu, while Klaasen’s name will remain a talking point until the Sudurpaschim Royals make an official announcement.
