The IPL 2025 final was a historic occasion for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who finally clinched their maiden IPL title after years of heartbreak. The final, held against Punjab Kings (PBKS), saw Virat Kohli top-score for RCB with a composed 43 off 35 balls, once again ending the season as their highest run-getter.
However, beyond the cricketing action, a light-hearted and viral moment involving Dinesh Karthik and Virat Kohli during a strategic timeout became the talk of the cricketing world.
The Timeout Chat: What Happened Between Dinesh Karthik and Virat Kohli?
During the first innings of the IPL 2025 final, cameras caught RCB’s mentor and batting coach Dinesh Karthik in an animated and lengthy discussion with Virat Kohli during a strategic timeout. Karthik was seen gesturing and speaking intently to Kohli, who was at the crease and trying to anchor the innings. This moment drew attention because, immediately after the timeout, Kohli was dismissed in the very next over, adding an ironic twist to the advice session.
Michael Atherton’s Playful Banter: What Did He Say?
Former England captain Michael Atherton, known for his sharp wit, seized on this moment during a Sky Sports podcast after the final. Atherton teased Dinesh Karthik, saying:
“I was just wondering, what could this man possibly be telling one of the greatest batters in cricket history? What advice would he offer him? And then I realised that whatever he said didn’t work, because he was out in the next over.”
Atherton’s jibe was both playful and pointed, highlighting the irony that Kohli, one of the world’s best batters, was dismissed right after receiving advice from Karthik. The comment drew laughter from everyone present, including fellow former England captain Nasser Hussain, who added, “This is the first time I’ve seen you speechless. You’re not saying anything.”
Dinesh Karthik’s Response: Handling the Banter
Caught off guard by Atherton’s question, Dinesh Karthik laughed and tried to sidestep the specifics, admitting:
“That’s probably the toughest question I’ve ever been asked on a podcast. At least I can handle the first part. But for the second, I’m trying to think carefully, without putting myself in danger by giving the wrong answer.”
Karthik’s witty and diplomatic response kept the mood light, and he ultimately said he couldn’t recall exactly what he told Kohli at the time, leaving the panel and fans in a split.
Fans’ Reactions: Mixed but Mostly Amused
The video of Karthik’s animated chat with Kohli during the IPL 2025 final quickly went viral on social media, sparking a wave of reactions from cricket fans. Many found the moment entertaining and appreciated the human side of the game, enjoying the banter between Atherton, Hussain, and Karthik. Some fans joked about what kind of advice Karthik could have possibly given to a legend like Kohli, while others admired the mentor’s dedication to supporting the team even in tense moments.
However, a few fans also questioned the effectiveness of the advice, given Kohli’s dismissal immediately after the timeout. Memes and humorous posts flooded platforms like Twitter and Instagram, making the “timeout lecture” one of the most talked-about moments of the IPL 2025 final. Overall, the fan reaction was a mix of amusement, curiosity, and respect for the coaching staff’s efforts behind the scenes.
Why Did This Moment Go Viral?
The reason this timeout chat between Dinesh Karthik and Virat Kohli went viral is twofold:
- The Irony: Karthik, as mentor, was advising Kohli, one of the greatest batters in cricket history, and Kohli was dismissed immediately after. This sequence made for perfect cricket banter and meme material.
- The Human Side of Cricket: Fans love behind-the-scenes stories, and this moment showed the camaraderie, humor, and unpredictability that make cricket so engaging. The fact that Karthik, usually quick-witted, was left speechless only added to the charm.
