Litton Das and Mahedi Hasan Fined for Breaching BCB Code of Conduct

Bangladeshi cricketers Litton Das and Sheikh Mahedi Hasan are likely to face financial penalties. The duo was found guilty of breaching the code of conduct set by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

The BCB’s disciplinary committee heard the players’ cases. In response to their individual disciplinary breaches, both Litton and Mahedi were penalized for the first time due to disciplinary issues in their career.

However, it is reported that Mahedi’s fine is higher than Litton’s, although the exact amount hasn’t been disclosed officially.

How did Litton Das breach the BCB Code of Conduct?

Bangladesh T20I captain Litton Das failed to obtain the board’s permission before leaving the nation. This is a requirement under the BCB’s code of conduct to be followed by every centrally contracted cricketer when they aren’t part of any bilateral series or formal cricket activities. As Das deviated from the protocol, BCB had to summon him to explain.

The 31-year-old was reported to have travelled to China without prior permission from the board. He returned home midway through the multi-format tour of Zimbabwe (one-off test, 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is).

Currently, Litton has travelled to Singapore for calf strain treatment after attending the BCB’s disciplinary proceedings. The closest source in the BCB medical department revealed that the injured Bangladeshi cricketer underwent a scan on Wednesday (July 22). The scan results will confirm his availability and participation for the forthcoming series against Australia.

Mahedi Hasan’s Controversial Statement

Bangladeshi spin-bowling all-rounder Mahedi Hasan’s comments came under scrutiny after being sidelined from the playing XI of the Australian T20I series. His remarks turned out to be controversial ahead of the 3rd T20I match against Australia on June 21.

Here is what the 31-year-old said by openly criticizing management’s choices, pointing out his lack of opportunities:

“Yes! As a cricketer, there would be a feeling of regret often. Despite playing only the T20 format, I am not a regular member. The most disappointing fact is that my place in the playing XI comes under the requirements of matchups or combinations,” Hasan said.

Notably, Mahedi has made repeated comments publicly that are against the Players Code of Conduct and the team management’s interest. And this isn’t the first time that his comments in the media have turned out to be argumentative.

‘Needs to Be Cross-Checked ’: BCB Source

The BCB source revealed a few updates after Mahedi appeared in front of the disciplinary committee on Wednesday (July 22):

“See! Certain issues need to be cross-checked, and his sanction is not yet decided. The committee will evaluate before making any decision to find out if the cricketer has previously committed such a similar disciplinary offence,” the BCB source explained.

‘Both Admitted Their Mistakes’: BCB Director’s Statement

Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir, the director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, said that both Mahedi Hasan and Litton Das should pay fines as they breached the code of conduct:

“See! Both (Litton and Mahedi) have admitted their mistakes, but still they have to pay fines for violating the code of conduct. The board is very clear when it comes to discipline.

Any player who breaches the rule must be held responsible, no matter if it is a player, board official, coach, or director.

As of now, the exact figures won’t be officially revealed. This is because the matter is being handled internally, but both players have been proposed financial penalties. However, Mahedi’s fine is expected to be higher than Das’s,” Alamgir said.

Furthermore, the BCB director explained the severity of Mahedi’s breach:

“Certainly! The breach of contract was clear, and a verbal warning was issued. However, the seriousness of the breach will be reviewed. At the same time, he admitted his fault, and a penalty will be imposed appropriately. A deduction from his match fee or a fine will be decided soon,” Mohammad Alamgir said.

Conclusive Facts

Few reports claim that Litton’s fine would tally upto 1 to 2 lakh BDT (Bangladeshi Taka) while Sheikh Mahedi Hasan could be penalized with a minimum of 5 to 10 lakh BDT. The exact figures are yet to be confirmed, and the final decision will be taken by the BCB president, Tamim Iqbal.

Despite a fine, Litton would remain a key player for Bangladesh. However, Mahedi’s repeated frustrations with the selection process may affect his long-term stability in the team’s playing XI.

As Bangladesh prepares for the upcoming series and ICC tournaments, the BCB maintains a strict stance by preventing unauthorized travel, public criticism, or breaching of the board’s protocols.

Most importantly, discipline is crucial for maintaining team unity, and by penalizing Litton and Mahedi, BCB is determined to hold players responsible for their actions. This helps preserve the team’s integrity and prevent similar breaches in the future.
