Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement from all forms of cricket has dealt a huge blow to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027. The three-time champions are now under pressure to find a KKR new captain.
Rahane’s retirement on July 30, 2026 (Thursday) prompts KKR to embark on its fifth captaincy search in a decade. Experts believe that the Knight Riders could turn up in the auction to acquire a new leader for the forthcoming 20th season of the league.
At the same time, there are chances that the franchise could either opt for a trade deal or appoint existing players in the squad for the leadership role.
Apart from Rinku Singh, who served as Rahane’s deputy in IPL 2026, there are different contenders to consider, such as Sunil Narine, Rovman Powell, Cameron Green, Varun Chakravarthy and several others.
1. Rinku Singh — Best Internal Choice Focusing on Long-Term
KKR vice-captain Rinku Singh emerges as the front-runner to replace Ajinkya Rahane for the captaincy role.
The left-handed batter has represented the Knight Riders since his IPL debut in 2018. His loyalty towards one single franchise makes him the favourite for KKR’s long-term captaincy stint. Having played 73 matches for Kolkata, Rinku amassed 1,394 runs in 22 innings, averaging 34 at a strike rate of 145.96.
Although Rinku doesn’t boast a huge level of captaincy experience, his leadership skills for Meerut Mavericks in UPT20 speak a lot:
- Won the championship title in the 2024 season.
- Concluded as the runner-up in the 2025 season.
- Won 13 out of 18 matches in two seasons (in 2024 and 2025), holding a success rate of 72.22%.
Also, Rinku Singh was appointed as the Uttar Pradesh captain, replacing Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25. However, his team suffered an 8-wicket loss to Vidharbha in Round 06 and failed to qualify for the knockouts.
Regardless of his limited captaincy experience, the 28-year-old deserves to take over the leadership and establish his worth as one of the successful captains for KKR.
Despite his inconsistent performances in recent times, KKR should back Rinku, as he is among the important players who possess strong insight into team dynamics.
2. Cameron Green — A Risky Option To Avoid
Australian pace bowling all-rounder Cameron Green is another contender to take over the captaincy role. The 27-year-old was acquired during the IPL 2026 player auction for a jaw-dropping deal of INR 25.20 crore.
Despite having the capability to fulfill the leadership role, Green’s limited experience as a white-ball skipper makes it a risky challenge for KKR.
There is no doubt that Green is a high-value overseas star player for the franchise. However, assigning additional responsibilities such as the captaincy might affect his all-round abilities as a right-handed batsman and medium pacer.
Moreover, there is a lack of clarity on his retention ahead of the next season’s auction. In the last season, he scored 322 runs in 14 innings and grabbed 7 wickets in 10 innings for KKR.
Suppose KKR prefers to appoint a new captain for one or two seasons without focusing on any long-term goals, then Green could be a good choice.
3. Hardik Pandya— Ultimate Choice in a Trade Scenario
Even though Hardik Pandya isn’t in the KKR squad, he still remains the strongest candidate for the captaincy role.
Several reports claim that either Chennai Super Kings or Kolkata Knight Riders are interested in acquiring Hardik via trade.
The 32-year-old’s success as Gujarat Titans captain could help KKR resolve multiple drawbacks such as:
- Experienced Indian captain to become the brand value of the franchise.
- Flexibility to bat at the middle and lower order.
- Consistent power-hitting batter and explosive finisher in the death overs.
- Pace bowling specialist in the powerplay and death overs.
Despite Hardik’s stint with Mumbai Indians turning out to be a failure, he was an outstanding leader for GT, having guided them to their maiden IPL title in 2022.
As the Gujarat-born all-rounder is capable of handling pressure in high-profile matches, KKR may part ways with Cameron Green without even thinking twice. This is because the Aussie pacer could be either released or traded with MI as a like-for-like replacement to secure Hardik’s services.
If Knight Riders seek an experienced Indian captain, Hardik Pandya could be an ideal choice to lead the franchise to its fourth IPL title win and become a long‑term skipper— but only if a trade happens.

Additional Captaincy Options to Explore Within KKR Squad
Apart from Rinku Singh, Cameron Green or Hardik Pandya, there are other alternatives KKR should consider.
Rovman Powell, Sunil Narine or Manish Pandey are additional internal names, but have a risk of assigning responsibility to an inexperienced captain. Despite Narine being a regular and experienced player for Knight Riders, he may be overlooked for the captaincy role as he is approaching the twilight of his career.
Overall, it is a challenge for KKR not only to find a replacement captain for Rahane but also a great leader to steer the franchise to success in the forthcoming IPL seasons.
