Is Shivam Dube a Real Seamer or Just Dominant Against Weak Teams?

Cricket journey of Shivam Dube has been intriguing, especially as a bowling option in the Indian team. Recently, his bowling performances have sparked a debate among fans and experts. The question is whether Shivam Dube is a genuine seamer who can succeed at the highest level or merely someone who shines mainly against lower-ranked teams.

Let’s dive deep into the data and the facts to find a clear answer with reasons and insights.

Shivam Dube’s Role as a Bowler

Dube is basically a left-handed batting all-rounder who throws either right-arm medium or seaming deliveries. Conventionally, in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and representing India in T20, Dube has been used mainly due to his ruthless batting in the middle-order. He has not been used to his full potential as a bowler by his former captains.

But with recent games such as the Asia Cup 2025 game against the UAE, he was given more overs to bowl, and the team was rewarded with his 3 wickets using a few runs. This outing put him in the limelight as a possible third seaming alternative to bowlers such as Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, who have proven their worth in the game by now.

Performance Trends Against Lower-Ranked Teams

A closer look at the T20 International statistics of Shivam Dube reveals that he has done better against lesser-ranked or comparatively weaker teams. Indeed, of the total 16 T20I wickets he has claimed to date, 12 were against such teams as Afghanistan, UAE, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe. This implies that he has taken about 75 percent of his wickets on these teams. He has performed poorly against more powerful teams like England and New Zealand, where he has bowled at a significantly elevated average and economy rate.

Notably,  he has not bowled even a single over against tough teams such as Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan because of choices in team strategy or a choice to be the captain. This has not had much exposure, and this has limited his opportunity to show himself on bigger stages.

Reasons Behind Success Against Lower-Ranked Teams

  1. Batting Quality and Experience of Opponents: The batting line-up of lower-ranking teams is usually less experienced and in-depth than that of the best international teams. The seam bowling by Dube is flourishing here since it can easily exploit technical weaknesses.
  2. Confidence and Opportunity:  Dube gets the chance to develop confidence when the opportunity to practice is constant, thus increasing his performance in bowling. When facing inferior opposition, he sometimes has the choice to bowl more overs and be more aggressive in his attack, which gives him more opportunities for wicket-taking.
  3. Limited Exposure to Top Batters: Dube has so far not been properly tested against the best, as he has limited exposure to world-class bowlers. This creates the possibility of his success being more of a chance than an upholding of dominance.

Bowling Potential and Untapped Talent

His recent performances indicate that Shivam Dube is a safe bowling bet when the first-line bowlers fail or the seam bowlers have the game on their side. This change in speed and distance, as well as his capability of delivering tight overs, can also be well-suited to the strategy of T20 cricket.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has given him a boost in the speed and confidence of holding the ball. As IPL regulations changed, such as the 2-bouncer-per-over regulation, Dube has demonstrated a greater ability to remain calm with fast-paced bowling and with the short ball, an already existing weakness. His bowling with weaker teams in other tournaments, such as the Asia Cup, has been beneficial in the sense of wicket-taking and assisting India to conquer weak competition.

Why He Is Not Yet a Third Genuine Seamer

  1. Statistical Limitations: His economy and average against strong teams are quite high, though these stats are from very limited overs or zero bowling. To judge a bowler genuinely, consistent match exposure against the best is necessary.
  2. Captaincy and Bowling Composure: Past Indian captains have preferred others over Dube for the seaming role against top teams. This shows a lack of full trust in his bowling under pressure against world-class batters.
  3. Competition in the Indian Team: With regular hard-hitting all-rounders and specialist bowlers like Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh on the rise, Dube faces competition for the seaming spot from bowlers with superior skills and consistency.
