IPL 2024 Finals Prediction: Several experts predict that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are the two teams that might reach the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 finals. These two batting powerhouses have set up an electrifying show in this tournament so far and achieved the highest scores in IPL history.

Let’s delve deeper into the strengths and weaknesses of KKR and SRH to find out why these two teams have maximum chances to lock horns against each other in the finals.

Two Teams that might reach IPL 2024 finals

Based on the dominating performance of KKR and SRH  in their 13 matches of the ongoing season, it is expected that these two teams will clash in the IPL 2024 finals:

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR): The Roar of Dark Horses

The 2-time defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders are set to enter the Qualifier 1 round as the table toppers. If Shreyas Iyer’s led side wins the first round of the playoffs, they will directly reach the IPL finals for the 4th time. Even if they lose the Qualifier 1 round, they will still have a chance to play against the winner of the eliminator round.

  • Explosive opening batter and spin bowler: The West Indies all-rounder Sunil Narine has delivered a consistent and explosive performance for KKR as a left-handed opening batter. In 12 matches, Narine scored 461 runs at an average of 38.42 and a strike rate of 182.94. He smashed 46 fours and 32 sixes, which shows his single-handed ability to dismantle any type of bowling attack. In terms of spin bowling, he took 15 wickets in 12 matches at an average of 20.80.

  • Power Hitters: Several power-hitting batters in the squad namely Venkatesh Iyer, Rinku Singh, Nitish Rana, Andre Russell and Ramandeep Singh can easily accelerate their team’s total.

  • Opening Combination: After Phil Salt left KKR in the middle of IPL 2024, the franchise is struggling to find a perfect opening partner for Sunil Narine.
  • Average Bowling: Although KKR bowling has been good, but hasn’t been strong when compared to the batting performance, especially in the death overs.
  • Mitchell Starc’s bowling performance: Australian star pacer Mitchell Starc became the costliest player in the IPL history after KKR bagged him for INR 24.75 crores during the auction, but has ended up delivering a poor bowling performance. In 11 matches, Starc took just 12 wickets by conceding 402 runs at an economy of 7.49 and failed to fulfil the expectations of the franchise owner as well as fans.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH): Orange Army’s Courage

Pat Cummins as the Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper has been riding a wave of luck and marked a successful debut in his T20 captaincy by guiding his team to the playoffs. The calmness of the orange army under pressure makes them one of the most formidable teams of IPL 2024.

  • Strong Opening pair: SRH has found Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head as the best opening combination. These duo batters achieved several record-breaking performances which include the most 50+ scores during the powerplay, the fastest 100-run partnership, most 50s in less than 20 balls and the highest total after the first 10 overs (167-0 in 9.4 overs).
  • Leadership and finishing skills: Pat Cummins’ cool leadership style and batting skills as the best finisher help his team to perform well under pressurized moments of a match.

  • Ability to post huge totals: SRH has posted 250+ scores three times in this season against RCB, MI and DC. Especially, SRH scored 287-3 in 20 overs, which is indeed the highest total in the IPL history.

  • Too much dependence on opening batters: If the opening partnership is broken at the early stage of the innings, then other SRH  batters find it difficult to score huge runs.
  • Medium-range bowling performance: Apart from T Natarajan (15 wickets in 10 matches) and Pat Cummins (14 wickets in 12 matches), the other bowlers delivered an average performance by leaking too many runs in the death overs.

Clash of Two Batting Powerhouses: Overall Facts

Since the Qualifier 1 round will be played at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. KKR having a highly equipped batting lineup can accumulate huge runs on the board, which can help them qualify for the finals.

Moreover, KKR and SRH possess a similar style of aggressive batting as these are the only two teams in IPL 2024 that commonly target the powerplay and death overs to accumulate huge runs.

Earlier, KKR and SRH clashed with each other in the 3rd match of IPL 2024 and both teams scored 200+ scores. However, Travis Head’s absence in SRH’s batting lineup during the thrilling run chase of the match resulted in KKR securing a 4-run victory.

Overall, several experts predict that once again KKR and SRH will compete against each other in the finals on 26th May at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Additionally, it is expected that this clash will witness the highest-scoring encounter in the history of IPL finals.
