Ind Vs Eng: Kuldeep Yadav Not Playing 1st Test Match

Why James Anderson and Kuldeep Yadav not playing 1st test match: IND vs ENG 1st test match 2024

Ind vs Eng: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s strange decision saw the inclusion of all-rounder Axar Patel, thereby Kuldeep Yadav not playing 1st test match against England. The match started on 25th January 2024 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.

On the other side, England captain Ben Stokes decided to drop the veteran speed bowler James Anderson for the opening test match against India.

Rohit Sharma admitted that it was tough for the entire team management to choose between Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel.

Experienced spinners like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja managed to secure their position, by promising to contribute well with the bat and ball.

The visiting skipper Ben Stokes opted to bat first after winning the toss. Despite Kuldeep Yadav not playing 1st test match, the Indian team bowlers wrapped up England’s innings for 246-10 in 64.3 overs on Day 1.

Ben Stokes played a supportive knock for his team by scoring 70 runs from 88 balls( including 6 fours and 3 sixes).

Especially, the Indian spin bowlers grabbed most of the wickets, while seamers like Bumrah and Siraj played supportive roles:

  1. Ravindra Jadeja:88-3 in 18 overs
  2. Ravichandran Ashwin: 68-3 in 21 overs
  3. Axar Patel: 33-2 in 13 overs
  4. Jasprit Bumrah: 28-2 in 8.3 overs
  5. Mohammed Siraj: 28-0 in 4 overs

Finally, Team India scored 119-1 in 23 overs at the end of Day 1. Yashasvi Jaiswal remained unbeaten by scoring his 2nd half-century in tests. He scored 76 runs from 70 balls (including 9 fours and 3 sixes), with his dynamic batting approach.

Why Kuldeep Yadav not playing 1st test match against England: Rohit Sharma reveals the reason

Rohit Sharma after the toss reveals why Kuldeep Yadav is not playing 1st test match even after maintaining an impressive record in test cricket:

“ Mainly, the decision wasn’t easier. Indeed, it was a tough judgment for the entire management to omit Kuldeep Yadav. But, we have taken an in-depth decision. We have included three spinners and two seamers in the playing XI.

Whenever Axar Patel played he always contributed his best efforts. Especially with the bat, he has performed well in these challenging conditions. The previous time when we played against Australia, he batted well and made a decent score. Perhaps, it is one of the prime reasons we have preferred Axar Patel for this match.”

From his above statement, Rohit Sharma simultaneously planned to strengthen the batting and bowling line-up.

Earlier, Rohit Sharma in the pre-match press conference stated that Kuldeep Yadav’s superb variation can contribute the best for his team even if the wicket offers bounce or not.

Rohit applauded Kuldeep as a mature bowler by adding the extra fact that he hasn’t played more test matches when compared to Ashwin and Jadeja. At the same time, he appreciated Axar Patel’s consistency in test cricket.

Though Rohit Sharma didn’t reveal his plan before the match, he hinted at the possibility of including Axar Patel in the team.

Ind vs Eng: Anil Kumble analyzes why Kuldeep Yadav not playing 1st test match against England

Former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble points out the pressure in the batting depth that Rohit Sharma might have faced ahead of the match. Mainly, it was due to Virat Kohli missing out on the first two test matches due to personal reasons.

Though the surface at Uppal Stadium favors Kuldeep Yadav, the former Indian spinner analyzed that it was the first match in 12 years that Team India is playing a test cricket without any of these batsmen in the playing XI namely:

  • Cheteshwar Pujara
  • Virat Kohli
  • Ajinkya Rahane

Furthermore, Rajat Patidar, who was named as the replacement batter for Virat Kohli, doesn’t have any experience in test cricket.

Consequently, Axar Patel was the only option for Rohit Sharma to prefer. His ability to bowl wicket-to-wicket and the depth added to the batting department can bridge the gap of Virat Kohli’s absence in the playing XI.

Moreover, Axar Patel has more experience in red-ball cricket when compared to Kuldeep.

Mainly, Virat Kohli’s self-exclusion resulted in Kuldeep Yadav not playing 1st test match against the Three Lions.

Why James Anderson is rested for the 1st test match in the England Tour of India 2024?

England Test skipper Ben Stokes after winning the toss said that the pitch would turn aggressively as the match progresses.

Surprisingly, the ECB, 20 hours before the toss session planned to omit James Anderson and officially announced four spinners namely:

  • Rehan Ahmed
  • Jack Leach
  • Tom Hartley
  •  Joe Root

As a result, Mark Wood is the only legitimate fast-bowling option for the England cricket team.

Moreover, Tom Hartley makes his test debut in the five-match test series thereby replacing James Anderson on a spin-friendly track. As a result, James Anderson has to wait for a few more test matches to reach his 700th test wicket.

Mark Wood would be playing his maiden test on the Indian soil, as Ben Stokes is unlikely to bowl after undergoing a knee injury.

Ben Stokes explains why the 40-year-old experienced fast bowler wasn’t included in the squad:

“We can’t ignore Wood with what he possesses as a package. Particularly, if we had to select a pace bowler, it would certainly be him. His faster pace and ability to bowl reverse swing prioritize him in the playing XI.

It is the skill he certainly has that is required by any team.”

Ultimately, Mark Wood’s reverse swing abilities make him secure his position in the playing XI.

Also, James Anderson who picked up 690 wickets in test cricket, hasn’t delivered his best performance in the Ashes 2023 series.

Probably, he couldn’t have got the best seam movement on the Indian pitch conditions.
