Powerplay dominance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has become a trademark for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The Orange Army has featured thrice in the elite list of highest power-play totals against different opponents.
In other words, Sunrisers have bagged the first three spots in the list of highest powerplay scores, with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ranking at the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
The Hyderabad-based franchise’s explosive batting approach has not only set a tone for commanding victories but also redefined the team’s aggressive strategy in the first six overs.
Especially, the SRH openers, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, took advantage of fielding restrictions and scored big runs in the first six overs, where only two fielders are permitted outside the 30-yard circle.
Let’s delve deeper to find out the top five highest powerplay scores in IPL history and how SRH has dominated the charts compared to the other teams.
1. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH): 125/0 vs Delhi Capitals (DC), IPL 2024
The IPL 2024 edition saw SRH setting a new trend of powerplay dominance against multiple opponents. Delhi Capitals was one of those teams that succumbed to the Sunrisers’ explosive batting attack.
Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma together amassed 125 runs in the first six overs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, which is indeed the highest powerplay total in IPL history to date.
Head’s 89 runs off 32 balls (including 11 fours and 6 sixes) and Abhishek’s quickfire 46 runs off 12 balls (including 2 fours and 6 sixes) left DC bowlers clueless. This is one of the rarest records of SRH that is unlikely to be outbeaten soon.
2. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH): 107/0 vs Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), IPL 2024
Two weeks after scoring a record-breaking powerplay total of 125/0 against Delhi Capitals, the Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to a tremendous start against Lucknow Super Giants.
Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma once again bagged the spotlight as the opening pair steered SRH to chase the 166 target in just 9.4 overs.
Head dominated against the new ball and scored an unbeaten 89 runs off 30 balls (including 8 fours and 8 sixes). On the other side, Abhishek too remained not out and scored 75 runs off 28 balls (including 8 fours and 6 sixes).
The clean hitting skills and fearless approach of the duo batters made them one of the most dangerous opening pairs in IPL history.
3. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH): 105/0 vs Punjab Kings (PBKS), IPL 2026
The 17th match of the IPL 2026 between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings entertained fans in a high-scoring contest.
Abhishek Sharma’s heroic knocks with the bat, scoring a rapid 74 runs off 28 balls (including 5 fours and 8 sixes), propelled Hyderabad to set a competitive 220 target against Punjab.
The southpaw’s dynamic half-century, added with Travis Head’s 38 runs off 23 balls (including 5 fours and 1 six), helped SRH post 105 without even losing a wicket in the powerplay.
4. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR): 105/0 vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), IPL 2017
Those were the golden days when Kolkata Knight Riders’ batting line-up featured an explosive opening combination of Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn. Back in the IPL 2017 edition, the duo of KKR openers ripped apart the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s bowling attack by scoring 105/0 in the power play.
Narine’s 54 runs off 17 balls (including 6 fours and 4 sixes), along with Chris Lynn’s 22-ball-fifty (5 fours and 4 sixes), set a solid foundation for their team to chase the 159 target with 29 balls to spare.
Despite securing a 6-wicket victory in that match, the unnoticed fact was that other KKR batters struggled to accumulate another 52 runs in the next 9 overs. While Narine and Lynn accumulated a century-run partnership in the first six overs. This is one of the most dynamic opening stands KKR would cherish in IPL history.
5. Chennai Super Kings (CSK): 100/2 vs Punjab Kings (PBKS), IPL 2014
The IPL 2014 Qualifier 2 between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings is one such unforgettable moment that glimpsed one man’s domination in the powerplay.
CSK’s star batter Suresh Raina scored 87 runs off 25 balls (including 12 fours and 6 sixes) in a high-pressure 227 run chase. He single-handedly steered his team to score 100/2 in the first six overs.
Unfortunately, other batters failed to accelerate the innings after Raina’s dismissal as the Super Kings suffered a 24-run loss to the Kings and faced elimination from the knockouts.
