The future of Hardik Pandya in the IPL is now becoming one of the major topics of discussion in the off-season for 2026. The Mumbai Indians captain has been linked with a possible move to Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of IPL 2027, with some reports suggesting that KKR could be ready to hand him the captaincy.
The story has picked up pace in recent weeks, especially after KKR were left without their 2026 captain Ajinkya Rahane. Rahane announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on July 30, leaving Kolkata with a major leadership question to solve before the next season.
Hardik Pandya has not been confirmed as KKR’s next captain, and no trade between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders has been completed. In fact, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said on August 7 that the reported deal is “far from happening”.

Why Hardik Pandya Is Being Linked With KKR
KKR need to think about their next captain after Rahane’s retirement. Rahane had led the side in both IPL 2025 and IPL 2026 after returning to the franchise. The official IPL website still lists him as KKR captain in its 2026 squad records, but his retirement has now opened the position for a new leader.
Hardik, meanwhile, has been the Mumbai Indians captain since the 2024 season. He took over after Rohit Sharma and has remained the team’s official captain through IPL 2026.
That makes him an obvious name for any franchise looking for an experienced Indian captain.
Hardik also brings something KKR would value beyond leadership. He is a genuine all-rounder who can bat in the middle order and bowl useful overs when fully fit.
What Happened to Hardik at Mumbai Indians?
The future of Hardik with Mumbai has become uncertain after an unfortunate 2026 IPL season.
Mumbai Indians finished ninth in the 10-team competition after losing 10 of their 14 league matches. Hardik’s individual numbers were also below the standards normally expected from him. He scored 206 runs in 10 innings at an average of 22.88 and a strike rate of 138.25, while taking only four wickets.
That poor season has naturally led to questions about his future. There were reports during the season that Mumbai could reconsider his captaincy. However, the situation was not always as clear-cut. Earlier in May, MI management was still backing Hardik and did not consider the team’s poor run solely a captaincy problem. Later reports suggested that the franchise was considering a leadership change after the season.
Can Hardik Decide His Next Team?
Another major part of the rumour is the suggestion that Hardik wants KKR because the franchise could give him the captaincy. Ashwin made this point while discussing the current speculation. He said a player can make it clear that he does not want to remain with his existing team, but that does not automatically give him the power to decide his next destination. The two franchises still have to agree on the trade.
That could become particularly important in Hardik’s case because Mumbai would be giving up a player who can directly strengthen another title contender.
Why the Captaincy Angle Makes Sense for KKR
The franchise has a strong group of young players and established names, but losing Rahane leaves a gap at the top. Hardik Pandya has already captained one IPL team, and he knows how to handle the pressure at one of the top teams of the IPL.
He also has a history of leadership success. He captained Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in their first season in 2022 and took them to the final again in 2023. For KKR, bringing in an experienced Indian all-rounder who could also take charge would solve two problems with one signing.
But it would also come at a price.KKR already have players such as Rinku Singh, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Cameron Green in their 2026 squad. Giving up important young talent for a player approaching the later part of his IPL career would be a major decision.
Hardik Pandya-KKR Trade: What Is Confirmed?
Hardik Pandya remains listed as Mumbai Indians captain in the official IPL records. Ajinkya Rahane, who captained KKR in IPL 2026, has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. There have been speculations linking Hardik with KKR and Chennai Super Kings.
Most importantly, there is no confirmed deal for Hardik Pandya. According to Ashwin, as of August 7, there was no deal done. He also said the deal was nowhere near completion and warned against assuming that Hardik would leave Mumbai.
So the headline that Hardik Pandya is “joining KKR” would be premature right now.
