T20 Premier leagues are in trend now. After the Indian Premier League, many other countries did start it too. Similarly, Bangladesh has the Bangladesh Premier league. They have 7 teams taking part in it. The franchises are final for the upcoming three years, i.e from 2023 to 2025. Next is the ninth season of the Bangladesh Premier League. BPL 2023 has some changes in it. Those, we are going to discuss below.
Change in applicability of the Decision Review System
The DRS system is one of the most epic tools of modern cricket. As per this, the teams can challenge the umpire’s decision, similar to tennis. This did turn the wrong decisions of the umpire multiple times. Now you might be thinking, as if it was available in the past there will be many records made.
Now in BPL 2023, we have a few changes to the Decision Review System. The governing council decided that the DRS system will only be available during the knockout stage. However, during the group stage, there will be no DRS system at all. It is just like old cricket.
However, there are other techniques available. But of course, those are not similar to the standard of the DRS. Still, it will be available during the group stage.
Reason of change
There are reports explaining the reason behind the decision. So, the time at which BPL 2023 takes place is clashing with two other franchise tournaments. As the resources are not abundant. Thus, getting the DRS available solely for the Bangladesh Premier League will be extremely difficult. And, this is why the BPL governing body took this decision.
What Ismail Mollick said?
Ismail Haider Mollic is the member secretary of the BPL governing council. As per The Daily Star Ismail Mollic said, “We will have the complete DRS system from the eliminator stage including the final, and for the remaining games, we are trying to introduce alternative DRS. We will have an upgraded version of alternative DRS this time around,”
He also did say that “Hawk eye technology is not available and virtual eye operates in Australia and New Zealand only. And there are a lot of matches going on around the world. Hawkeye has commitments with bilateral series which is why we will have that only from the eliminator stage,”
News beside DRS
Though the information about the DRS is the major one. Still, there are some more interesting facts about BPL 2023. That is, during the upcoming season of the Bangladesh premier league there will be an increase in the prize money. So, for the Man of the Series, the player will get 10 lahks, Bangladeshi Taka. In addition, the other individual awards such as best bowler, man of the match, and many more, will also get a bigger prize as compared to earlier BPL tournaments. Most importantly, the team who will win gets 2 crores of Bangladesh Taka. However, the teams grabbing the place of runners-up will get BTK 1 crore. Thus the total prize money is BTK 4 crores. Which is much higher than last time.
Date of Starting and other details
Here comes the date for the fans of the Bangladesh Premier League. The very first match will take place on 6th January 2023. It will take place between last year’s champions, Comilla Victorians and Chattogram Challengers.
As we know, there are seven teams in total, taking part in the league. Those seven teams will play against each other in a double round-robin format. Further, the top four teams after the group stage will enter the knockout stage.
In total there will be 46 matches. Out of those 46, 42 matches will be over in the group stage. Each team plays at least once against each of the remaining teams. The next four matches will take place in the knockout round.
In total there are three venues, in which all these matches will be played. Those are Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram, and The Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
All four knockout matches will take place in Dhaka. And the final match is scheduled for February 16th, 2023.
All in all, besides the change in DRS we have an enhancement in prize money and other prizes. Which is definitely a good thing.
