Following an insulting 89-run loss to the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the fans erupted against the lackluster performance of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The five-time champions were bowled out for 140 in their last league stage match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
A failure to chase the 230-run target in a must-win game paved the way for elimination from the playoff race in the ongoing season. This was indeed CSK’s disastrous loss (in terms of runs) in the history of IPL since 2008.
Fans took to social media to express their frustration with the captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and head coach Stephen Fleming.
Let’s take a look at the trending reactions that reveal how the Super Kings franchise was trapped in a soup of criticism after a humiliating defeat to the Titans.
Fans’ Harsh Comments Against CSK’s Subpar Performance in IPL 2026
Here are the most brutal criticisms CSK has faced, which raise questions about whether they have taken fans’ emotions for granted over the past couple of seasons.
- Wins and defeats are not an issue, but the lack of intent from the captain, players, and the head coach is a huge problem. We hope that franchise management takes some positive actions before next year”.
- CSK to revamp its squad before it’s too late. The entire coaching staff needs to be shown the door towards exit. A new coaching staff is required who can understand the modern era of T20 cricket and train youngsters, rather than sitting at the dugout with a smile.
- A pathetic performance from CSK, which hurts fans’ emotions deeply. Our favorite team didn’t perform so badly before 2024. Feels sad seeing the entire squad being clueless and helpless.
- A humble suggestion to CSK. Please don’t lose your legacy by acquiring low-quality players in the auction. It’s time to open your eyes and mind ahead of the next season.
- CSK needs to sort out these errors to avoid further repetition in the next IPL season:
- Improper team selection during the player auction
- Not adapted to the modern style of playing T20 cricket.
- Poor captaincy from Ruturaj Gaikwad for the past three seasons
- Big loopholes in CSK’s batting, bowling, and fielding. Now, concerns about wicketkeeping have been raised in the absence of MS Dhoni.
Ruturaj Gaikwad and His Men Fined After Playing the Last IPL 2026 Match
Soon after CSK played its last game of the season against GT, the IPL Governing Council (GC) fined Ruturaj Gaikwad for INR 24 lakh as the slow over rate penalty.
Additionally, all team members, including the impact players, were fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their match fee (the lesser one preferred)
Gaikwad and his men were penalized because of the slow-over rate during the 66th match of the IPL 2026 against GT in Ahmedabad.
However, the CSK captain didn’t undergo any ban for his next IPL match, as it was his second offense in this season. But, this news was enough for fans to brutally criticize the team that suffered a miserable campaign because of Dhoni’s absence.
CSK’s Exit From IPL 2026: Gaikwad’s Captaincy Under Scrutiny
Chennai Super Kings suffered yet another heartbreaking campaign after finishing the points table with 13 points and a net-run-rate (NRR) of +0.011. This was indeed the third consecutive instance under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy that the team failed to qualify for the playoffs.
After losing to the Gujarat Titans by 89 runs in Ahmedabad, the five-time champions’ playoff hopes were no longer alive.
Injuries and inconsistency were the main reasons that haunted CSK’s success rate throughout this season. Although youngsters like Urvil Patel and Kartik Sharma exhibited a few notable performances, they failed to replicate Dhoni’s destructive batting performance, particularly his finishing skills in the death overs.
Did CSK Miss Dhoni’s Legacy?
For the first time in IPL history, MS Dhoni didn’t play a single match of a season, which proves how his absence hurt CSK’s identity.
Initially, the former CSK captain was ruled out due to a calf strain and missed out half of the league stage matches. Still, the franchise hinted at his potential return to the squad.
As he was expected to make a comeback in a must-win game against GT, several reports claimed that he suffered a thumb injury.

Fan Reactions: Did CSK Take Emotions For Granted?
CSK’s dedicated supporters felt that the franchise’s communication strategy was totally deceiving, taking fans’ emotions for granted.
Moreover, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s training videos on the net were released on social media. This ignited hopes among fans that the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman would feature in CSK’s playing XI and steer the team into the playoffs.
Dhoni’s availability was kept in suspense, and former cricketers like Krishnamachari Srikkanth slammed, saying that the franchise disappointed the loyal fans with false signals.
