On 14th August 2024 (Wednesday), the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) officially announced the squads for all four teams participating in the forthcoming Duleep Trophy starting from September 05 (Thursday). The 17th edition of the tournament marks the beginning of India’s domestic season 2024-25 in the red ball format, where several international cricketers will play along with the young talents.
Interestingly, you will find the best performers of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 participating in the Duleep Trophy. For example, players from the Rajasthan Royals franchise such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Avesh Khan, Tanush Kotian, and Prasidh Krishna grabbed the attention of selectors to secure a spot in the squad.
Indian batter-wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant makes a comeback into the red-ball format after a long gap since his life-threatening car accident. The 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batter played his last test match against Bangladesh at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka in December 2022.
Along with Jaiswal and Pant, you can find many of the regular test players participating in this tournament such as Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, and Arshdeep Singh in each of the four teams. It would be a preparatory phase for these players ahead of the red ball series against Bangladesh.
As expected Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have opted themselves out of the tournament to manage their workload for the busy international schedule till the Champions Trophy 2025.
Why Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are not playing Duleep Trophy 2024?
Team India’s captain Rohit Sharma and veteran batter Virat Kohli have decided to omit the Duleep Trophy 2024 and join the preparatory camp of the test squad before the commencement of the test series against Bangladesh starting on September 19.
The BCCI secretary Jay Shah clarified that the Board hasn’t allowed these two key players to participate in the domestic tournament ahead of the home test series to avoid the risks of injury.

Conclusion:
Earlier, the Duleep Trophy used to be played in an inter-zonal format, which was changed by the BCCI. In this edition, there will be four teams namely Team A, Team B, Team C, and Team D.
Overall, there will be 6 games in the first round of the tournament. Each team gets an opportunity to play 3 matches in a round-robin format. There will be no knockouts and the team that concludes with maximum points will be titled as the Duleep Trophy Champions.
It is a valuable opportunity for Ishan Kishan to enhance his chances of making a comeback into the Indian national team, after losing his central contract with BCCI for not participating in domestic cricket.
Suppose any cricket players are selected for the Indian cricket team squad for the test match series against Bangladesh, they would be allowed to continue with their preparation to fulfill their commitment towards national duties. In that case, they will be replaced by other players in the Duleep Trophy.
Overall, the Duleep Trophy 2024-25 provides the most memorable experience for young talented players to compete against the top international cricketers and upgrade their cricketing skills to the next level.
