BCCI Sacked Hardik Pandya From T20 Captaincy

BCCI sacked Hardik Pandya from T20 captaincy for Team India: Jay Shah Confirms Indian captain for T20 World Cup 2024

An unexpected twist arose when BCCI sacked Hardik Pandya from T20 captaincy. Speaking at a recent event, BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed Rohit Sharma will continue as Indian captain for T20 World Cup 2024.

Over the past few months, the fans fueled the debate about Hardik Pandya or Rohit Sharma, who will be India’s captain in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Especially, the speculation became stronger when Hardik Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians and replaced Rohit Sharma as the new MI captain.

However, Jay Shah ended the suspense. He confirmed that Rohit Sharma will continue as the captain and Hardik Pandya would be his deputy.

Another reason why BCCI sacked Hardik Pandya from T20 captaincy is because he is still recovering from his ankle injury. Hardik hasn’t completely recovered from his injury that was sustained during the ICC World Cup 2023 against Bangladesh.

The series between India and Afghanistan in January 2024 marked the return of Rohit Sharma’s T20 captaincy after 14 months. The 36-year-old cricketer led his team to a clean sweep of 3-0 against Afghanistan. Indeed, it was the last white-ball series assignment for the Indian cricket team ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024.

Particularly, Rohit Sharma hasn’t played the shortest format of the game since Team India’s exit in the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Since then, Hardik Pandya has taken responsibility as Team India’s skipper in T20Is. He continued his tenure until the 2023 ODI World Cup.

After the 2023 ODI World Cup, Hardik Pandya’s injury forced him to stay out of his team. Consequently, Suryakumar Yadav led the team in two T20I series- Australia and South Africa.  However, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli made a return to T20Is following Suryakumar’s groin injury.

BCCI sacked Hardik Pandya from T20 captaincy: Jay Shah supports Rohit Sharma

Jay Shah made his statement in a recent event where Rohit Sharma, the head coach Rahul Dravid, Chairman of men’s NCA, and a few of the Indian cricketers were present at Rajkot. The function was organized to mark the occasion of renaming the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium as the Niranjan Shah Stadium:

“ It is a joint decision. The selectors are completely aligned on the matter. Currently, Rohit Sharma is the captain of all formats. However, Hardik Pandya retains his position as vice-captain for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. In such circumstances, we should authorize the leadership responsibility.”

Furthermore, Jay Shah recalls Rohit Sharma’s century in the 3rd T20I match against Afghanistan:

“ We cannot question his abilities. If you recollect the moments from the Afghanistan T20I match, we were in a tough situation with 27-4. But, Rohit Sharma’s magnificent century was a game-changing moment.”

Jay Shah, the secretary of BCCI sacked Hardik Pandya from T20 captaincy by trusting Rohit Sharma’s leadership and citing another example of ICC World Cup 2023:

“There is another fact you need to know. I haven’t made any comment about the ICC World Cup 2023. Although we managed to win 10 straight games in the tournament, we declined unexpectedly in the finals played at Ahmedabad. It’s a part and parcel. Whichever side plays better wins the contest.

However, I can guarantee you that India will lift the T20 World Cup in Barbados under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy on 29th June 2024.”

Jay Shah’s bold announcement came a day ahead of the third test match between India and England.
