BCB Appoints Najmul Hossain Shanto As Full-Time Captain

Recently, BCB appointed Najmul Hossain Shanto as the full-time captain for the next 1 year. The 25-year-old right-handed batsman captained Bangladesh in the multi-format series against New Zealand from November to December 2023.

Nazmul Hasan, the Bangladesh Cricket Board(BCB) president, said that the team doesn’t want to take any chance ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Especially, with the uncertainty of Shakib Al Hasan’s availability due to his eye problem. Furthermore, the Bangladeshi star all-rounder said he wasn’t sure about his future captaincy.

Even the BCB preferred Shakib as the first choice to return to the captaincy role. But the question marks regarding his health initiated them to opt for Najmul.

Due to the same issue, Shakib Al Hasan missed several matches of the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League BPL 2024 tournament.

Till now, Najmul Hossain Shanto as the full-time captain led Bangladesh to 11 international matches. It includes 2 Tests, 6 ODIs and 3 T20Is.

Earlier, Bangladesh Head Coach Chandika Hathurusingha said that it is time that Najmul Hossain Shanto as the full-time captain takes responsibility.

Chandika was impressed with Najmul’s leadership skills in the recent past when he led the Bangladesh cricket team in Shakib’s absence.

Fans will catch Bangladesh in action by playing the multi-format home series against Sri Lanka in the next month which includes 3 T20Is and ODIs, and 2 Tests. Interestingly, it is the first assignment for Najmul Hossain Shanto as the full-time captain.

BCB President about Najmul Hossain Shanto as the full-time Captain

The BCB president Nazmul Hasan clarifies why Najmul Hossain Shanto as the full-time captain could be the ideal choice:

“It is confirmed for all three formats. We have selected Najmul as the all-format captain for the national team this year.

Also, I have spoken to Shakib. His eye issue is persisting and causing discomfort. Moreover, there is uncertainty about his participation in the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Since the World Cup is approaching closer, we didn’t want to take any chance.

Shakib Al Hasan was our first preference. But, we didn’t want to delay the decision by remaining in a state of uncertainty. We had to pick a captain who could run the team smoothly and be a perfect replacement for Shakib.

Furthermore, we weren’t sure about Shakib’s participation, so we chose Najmul for all three formats.”

Nazmul Hasan conveys that Shakib faced an eye problem during the ODI World Cup 2023. As a result, he was forced to pursue advanced treatment in Britain and Singapore.

Shakib Al Hasan declared in advance that he would step down from captaincy after the 50-over-World Cup tournament. He also predicted that it wouldn’t be possible for him to lead in tests. But, he expressed his curiosity to lead his team in the T20 World Cup. Shakib’s continuing issue with the retina in the left eye marks an end to his desire to lead the team in the upcoming contest.

Najmul Hossain Shanto as the full-time Captain: Overall Facts

Earlier, the BCB formed a special three-panel committee to assess their players’ performance in the ICC World Cup 2023. Based on the discussion, the BCB has decided to implement major changes since the Bangladesh Cricket Team hasn’t won any ICC Trophy even once.

According to the schedule, it is estimated that Najmul Hossain Shanto as the full-time captain will lead Bangladesh in 14 Tests, 9 one-day internationals (ODIs), and 21 Twenty20 internationals (T20Is) this year. It includes the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 tournament as well.

Mainly, under Najmul’s captaincy, Bangladesh secured its first-ever T20 and ODI win on New Zealand soil. Across all the formats, Shanto scored 1,650 runs, with an average of 42.30 in 2023. He struck five-centuries, which is the highest by any Bangladeshi batsman in a calendar year.

Especially, Bangladesh leveled the test and T20I series against New Zealand with 1-1 under his leadership in 2023.

Meanwhile, the BCB implemented some changes to the national selection panel by appointing the former Bangladesh skipper Gazi Ashraf Hossain as the new chief selector for the next two years. It means that Minhajul Abedin’s eight-year period as a chief selector finally comes to an end.

Similarly, Tamim Iqbal was one of the biggest names in BCB’s central contract list for 2024. He misses out on the two squads- ODIs and T20Is against Sri Lanka. At the same time, Shoriful Islam and a few other players of the ICC World Cup 2023 feature in the squads. Only Aliss Al Islam is the new off-spinner in the squad.

Also, veteran players like Mahmudullah and opening batsman Mohammad Naim return to the squad after 2022, following their best performance in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League tournament.
