Bangladesh Tour of Nepal: Why Is This T20I Series Historic?

Bangladesh are set to make their first-ever cricket tour of Nepal, travelling to Kathmandu for a historic three-match T20I series in March 2027. The series, confirmed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), will also be the first bilateral international series between the two countries’ senior men’s teams.

The three matches will be played at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Stadium in Kirtipur. More than just a cricket series, the tour will carry a message of friendship and solidarity as the matches have been dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives in the devastating floods that recently affected Nepal.

All three T20Is will be hosted in Kathmandu in March 2027.

The series will give Nepal the chance to host a Test-playing nation in a bilateral series for the first time. CAN has described it as the biggest bilateral cricket series hosted by Nepal so far. For Bangladesh, the tour is also a first. The Tigers have never previously travelled to Nepal for an international series.

First Bilateral Series Between the Two Teams

Bangladesh and Nepal have met only twice in men’s international cricket so far, and both meetings came at ICC Men’s T20 World Cups.

Their first encounter was during the 2014 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. The hosts won that match by eight wickets. Ten years later, the teams met again at the 2024 T20 World Cup in St Vincent, where Bangladesh secured a 21-run victory.

The 2024 game was particularly memorable because Bangladesh successfully defended 106, making it the lowest total ever defended in a T20 World Cup match at that time. The result also helped Bangladesh move into the Super Eight stage.

The upcoming series will therefore be the first opportunity for the two sides to play multiple matches against each other outside an ICC tournament.

Series to Honour Nepal Flood Victims

The timing of the tour gives the series a meaning beyond the cricket field. BCB confirmed that the three matches will be dedicated to the memory of people who lost their lives in the recent floods in Nepal. The boards want the series to serve as a way for the two countries to express sympathy towards affected families and communities.

The BCB said the matches would provide an opportunity for Bangladesh and Nepal to come together through cricket and send a message of friendship and solidarity during a difficult period. The decision also adds a humanitarian element to what is already an important sporting occasion for Nepal.

BCB Promises Wider Support for Nepal Cricket

The agreement between the two boards is not limited to the three T20Is. Bangladesh has also assured CAN of continued cooperation in the development of Nepali cricket. The planned areas of cooperation include men’s and women’s tours, High Performance programmes, training and technical support, along with other development activities.

Future tours involving Nepal A and bilateral A-team series are also expected to receive encouragement. CAN has separately highlighted support for women’s cricket, age-group cricket and capacity-building programmes as part of the wider partnership.

This could give Nepal’s players and coaching staff more chances to work with teams and programmes from a Test-playing nation.

A Major Moment for Nepali Cricket

Hosting Bangladesh will be a major step for Nepal’s international cricket programme. CAN had already been looking to bring a Test-playing country to Nepal, with the board identifying such fixtures as an important part of its plans for the growth of the game. The Bangladesh series now turns that plan into reality.

For Nepal, playing a Full Member nation at home should also give local fans a chance to watch international cricket involving a well-established Asian team at the TU International Cricket Stadium. For Bangladesh, meanwhile, the tour offers a new international experience and an opportunity to build a closer cricketing relationship with Nepal.

Bangladesh Tour of Nepal: More Than Three T20Is

The March 2027 series could become the starting point for a longer relationship between the two cricket boards.

Bangladesh and Nepal have already agreed that cooperation should extend to development programmes, training, women’s cricket, age-group cricket and A-team exchanges. That makes the tour more significant than a three-match fixture on the international calendar. When the first T20I begins in Kirtipur on March 26, 2027, it will mark a new chapter in Bangladesh-Nepal cricket relations. The matches will bring together two teams that have crossed paths only twice before, while also giving Nepal its first home bilateral series against a Test-playing nation.
